“Refugee” jailed for trying to smuggle child porn into Canada

U.A.E. man jailed for trying to smuggle child porn into Canada

If Hani Al Askari wasn’t facing the loss of his refugee status he would likely be serving more than an 18-month sentence, a judge said Friday.

But because Al Askari’s criminal convictions for possessing and importing child pornography will mean he’ll be expelled from Canada, that punishment was sufficient, Justice Earl Wilson said.

“These convictions will result in a rejection of his refugee claim status,” Wilson said, in denying Crown prosecutor Jenny Rees’ request for a three-year sentence.
