Some ink has been spilled in recent days commemorating the 35th anniversary of Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s now-famous “long walk in the snow” and how, just months later, his party was trampled at the polls by newcomer Brian Mulroney and his Progressive Conservatives.

Trudeau, the father of our current prime minister, had his two closest confidantes — Sen. Keith Davey and Jim Coutts — warning him through private polling that his jig was up, so he wisely took himself out of play to avoid the inevitability of public humiliation.
