GUNTER: Trudeau had no choice but to fire McCallum

Whether you think John McCallum’s statements this week in the Meng Wanzhou case were right or wrong, the former Liberal cabinet minister who served as Canada’s ambassador to Beijing, had to be fired.

McCallum clearly sided with the Chinese government’s position against Canada’s arrest of Meng, a Huawei telecommunications executive, in Vancouver in December. His words so badly compromised his objectivity, McCallum could no longer be trusted as Canada’s representative to the People’s Republic.
