Paris in lockdown: Tear gas is fired and more than 500 ‘yellow vest’ protesters are arrested

Paris is on lockdown as armed police battle to contain ‘yellow vest’ demonstrators with more than 500 arrests so far today in the fourth straight weekend of demonstrations over living costs and proposed tax rises in France.

Dozens of streets in central Paris were closed to traffic, while the Eiffel Tower and world-famous museums such as the Musee d’Orsay, the Centre Pompidou and the Louvre were closed.
