Merkel ally Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer wins vote to succeed her

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ally Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has been chosen to replace her as leader of the Christian Democratic Union party, after a runoff vote this afternoon.

Kramp-Karrenbauer, 56, sometimes dubbed ‘mini Merkel’, is the CDU’s general secretary and is admired by its upper echelons for her cross-party appeal.

So nothing has changed.
