Scientists Finally Know How Wombat Butts Make Cube-Shaped Poops

Cubed wombat poop is one of those wonders of the animal kingdom, like the giant body of the blue whale or the superfast punch of the mantis shrimp, that seems like it shouldn’t work on a basic physical level. There’s a reason poops are usually spheres or tapered cylinders: Try squeezing a cube out of a tube of toothpaste. Round chutes and round holes like to produce round things.

But in new research presented at the 71st Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics on Nov. 18,a team of researchers led by Patricia Yang of the Georgia Institute of Technology said that they’ve figured it out.

Another Canadian city dumps millions of litres of raw sewage into the St. Lawrence River

The city of Longueuil is advising residents to avoid contact with river water in the area east of the La Fontaine Tunnel as an eight-day-long release of raw sewage into the St. Lawrence begins.

Tap water is still fine to consume, but residents and businesses in the area are being advised to limit their water consumption for now.
By next Thursday, the city will have dump 162 million litres, the equivalent of about 65 Olympic-sized swimming pools, into the river.

Revolutionary scenes in France as Macron is losing control

The ‘Yellow Vest’ movement began on social media in October over a surge in fuel prices this year, particularly the price of diesel, with many blaming taxes implemented in recent years in France’s anti-pollution fight.

It has quickly escalated into a much broader protest over slack spending under President Emmanuel Macron. More than 850,000 people signed a petition supporting the ‘Yellow Vests’ and there are hundreds of pages on Facebook calling on people to join the protests.

Canada’s brain-injured Cuba diplomats speak out about Ottawa’s silence

It is the view of several of the diplomats that Ottawa is avoiding public statements and investigations into the brain injuries because Canada, in contrast to the United States, considers it strategically important to maintain a comparatively close relationship with Cuba’s Communist regime, for trade and political reasons.

“They are afraid of upsetting Cuba because of Canada’s bid for a UN Security Council seat,” one diplomat said. Canada is in the midst of an intensive lobbying campaign to win a rotating seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2021-22. Cuba is considered vital to such UN votes as it holds influence over many African and Latin American UN member states.
