Immigration department changed ‘illegal’ to ‘irregular’ on webpage about asylum seekers as debate flared

The immigration department changed a web page about asylum seekers to swap the word “illegal” for “irregular” as a debate was erupting between the federal government and Ontario on the issue, CBC News has learned.

The change in July came 18 months after the web page, titled “Claiming asylum in Canada – what happens?,” was first published — and just one day after federal Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen suggested the provincial Progressive Conservatives were mistaken in the way they were describing the status of people entering Canada at non-official entry points.

‘What other restrictions has the White House placed on the FBI?’ Senator Dianne Feinstein says lack of interviews with Brett Kavanaugh or Dr Christine Blasey Ford raises ‘serious concerns’ the probe isn’t ‘credible’

Senator Dianne Feinstein says she is concerned the FBI’s re-opened investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is not ‘credible’ because the bureau didn’t interview him or his accuser.

The FBI didn’t interview Kavanaugh or his accuser Dr Christine Blasey Ford because it didn’t have clear authority from the White House to do so, Bloomberg reports, citing two people with knowledge of the matter.

In fact, the bureau only contacted 10 people and interviewed nine of them – the New York Times reports – amid claims that the White House placed limits on the probe.

ALLISON: Trudeau’s Failure to Remove Steel & Aluminum Tariffs is a Big Blow to Canadian Businesses

Canada is a trading nation, with one in five jobs directly related to trade. Many of these jobs are in our steel, aluminum, automotive, and manufacturing sectors, contributing billions to our GDP while supporting the livelihoods of thousands of Canadians.

These sectors are deeply integrated with our neighbors to the south.

Earlier this year, I traveled to the United States with our Conservative Leader, Andrew Scheer, to meet with our counterparts and push the benefits of free trade.

Trump has not yet signed refugee determination, therefore zero refugees being admitted to the US right now

Last month, the administration proposed a record-low refugee ceiling for the 2019 fiscal year of 30,000 refugees. By law, Congress must be consulted about the cap before a final number can be issued.

“We are extraordinarily disappointed that the administration has failed to honor the spirit and the letter of the law when it comes to consultations,” said Mary Giovagnoli. executive director of Refugee Council USA. “For two years in a row now, the administration has just failed to take it seriously.”

‘Some baloney’ in Trudeau’s claims about supply management under new trade deal

“We have a supply management system that continues to be very much in place to protect both our agricultural sector and our consumers. This is something that continues. We have made modifications to the way it works, but we also know that it is something that will ensure the viability and the strength of supply management for years to come.”
