Liberals to pump millions into Indigenous housing in budget

The federal government will commit hundreds of millions of dollars in long-term funding to Indigenous housing in next week’s budget, sources say.

Indigenous communities face the most acute housing situation in the country, thanks to a shortage of homes and the need to repair many currently standing.

The Liberals have promised unique housing strategies for Inuit, Metis and First Nations communities to go along with the 10-year, $225-million urban Indigenous plan unveiled late last year.

Opposition parties are demanding to know why a damning report was kept under wraps by the provincial government, including allegations of improper interference in legal charges and opinions out of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General.

The report quotes staff members complaining of a culture of widespread racism, bullying and unfair workplace reprisals orchestrated by senior management.
