Dear America: Your News Media Absolutely Hates You

It’d be nice to say that American media doesn’t hate this country. It’d be nice to claim that the American press, while maintaining objectivity and balancing against bias, is still inherently American – that they are patriots who love this country even as they report on its defects. Recall the quote from Daniel Patrick Moynihan while Ambassador to the United Nations: “Am I embarrassed to speak for a less than perfect democracy? Not one bit. Find me a better one. Do I suppose there are societies which are free of sin? No, I don’t. Do I think ours is, on balance, incomparably the most hopeful set of human relations the world has? Yes, I do. Have we done obscene things? Yes, we have. How did our people learn about them? They learned about them in the newspapers.” And that is important.

Government of Ontario : Premier Kicks Off Tour of Ontario College and University Campuses

Premier Kathleen Wynne was at Laurentian University in Sudbury today to kick off a four-day tour of Ontario postsecondary institutions. Students will have the chance to engage with the Premier and share their ideas about how we can create a fairer, better and greener province with more opportunity for everyone.

The Premier will also talk with students, faculty and staff about a range of issues at postsecondary campuses in Sudbury, Kingston, Cambridge, Windsor and throughout Toronto and the surrounding area. This will include engaging with students on how Ontario can lead the way in the fight against climate change and highlighting the province’s actions — such as helping campuses retrofit their facilities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the Greenhouse Gas Campus Retrofit Program.

Boston Police Dept Apologizes For Tweet Honoring Celtics Coach Red Auerbach During Black History Month

Well, it finally happened — the worst thing ever to occur anywhere at any time.

“In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth we pay tribute to @celtics legend #RedAuerbach for being the 1st @NBA coach to draft a black player in 1950, field an all African-American starting five in 1964 and hire the league’s 1st African-American head coach (Bill Russell) in 1966.”

That was the tweet posted on Twitter by the Boston Police Department. And we want to point out again that it is the. worst. thing. ever.

California: 43-year-old youth counselor converted to Islam, joined ISIS

As a 43-year-old youth counselor from Sacramento, California, Brian Dempsey certainly did not fit the traditional profile of someone likely to travel to Syria in hopes of joining ISIS — but his journey is helping shed new light on why some Americans decide to fight alongside extremists in combat zones on the other side of the world.

Dempsey is one of 64 Americans whose experiences in Iraq and Syria were profiled as part of a new report released Monday by the Program on Extremism at George Washington University.

Outrage over Colten Boushie case underscores launch of Winnipeg healing forest

Both anger and hope highlighted the launch event for a healing forest in Winnipeg, as emotions continue to run high after the not-guilty verdict in Gerald Stanley’s trial for killing Colten Boushie.

Organizers behind the forest, a living memorial to Indigenous children lost to or affected by the residential school system, say it will be a place of peace and contemplation where people of all generations can remember the past and envision the future.
