ACLU Complains: “Trump Used the Word ‘America’ More Than 80 Times”

The American Civil Liberties Union — note the word “American” in its title — complained Tuesday night about President Trump’s repeated use of the word “America” in his State of the Union speech.

“Tonight, President Trump said the word ‘America’ more than 80 times in his speech. Yet, after a divisive first year, we hear and feel how exclusionary that ‘America’ is, with policies that have harmed so many vulnerable American communities. The ACLU stands ready to protect these communities, both in the courts and at the polls.”

Controversial Cornwallis statue removed from Halifax park

A statue of Edward Cornwallis, Halifax’s controversial founder, was removed from the park that also bears his name Wednesday afternoon.

Crews strapped the statue, hooked it on to a crane and lifted it from its pedestal around 4:30 p.m. local time to a small crowd of cheering people. The statue was then placed on the back of a truck headed for storage. Work to remove the statue started around 11 a.m.

Halifax regional council voted 12-4 Tuesday to remove the bronze monument commemorating Cornwallis, the military officer who founded Halifax in 1749.

Why Angela Merkel REALLY opened the borders to Germany – and Europe

Bremen-based political scientist Philip Manow said “cheesy ideas of Merkel’s Mother Teresa moment” live on, but Germans should not be fooled.

He said the real reason for the German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s widely-criticised open-door refugee policy was to save Germany from losing billions if its eurozone neighbour collapsed into economic ruin.

Writing for German newspaper FAZ, Mr Manow said: “The opening of the border was the almost inevitable protection of the Greece deal.”

Social justice warriors are coming for your outdoor cat

Your fluffy friend may be wreaking havoc on your local ecosystem.

A new report from Cornell University showed many people in the sustainability world don’t approve of outdoor cats. The researchers created two identical profiles of a “green” property with a small lawn, low pesticide usage and solar panels. One version had an icon indicating an indoor cat and the other had one with an outdoor cat. The researchers found that participants who didn’t own cats negatively judged property owners with an outdoor cat and considered them less likely to engage in environmentally-friendly behavior.

B’nai Brith Canada Appalled by Antisemitism on “Muslims in Calgary” Website

B’nai Brith Canada has filed a complaint with the Calgary Police Service over the virulently antisemitic content being promoted by a group, Muslims in Calgary, on its website and Facebook page.

On Wednesday, a concerned community member alerted B’nai Brith to an article posted by the group on Jan. 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in which the author denies that six-million Jews were killed by the Nazis and their collaborators, claiming that the Holocaust has been exaggerated by Jews in order to attract global sympathy.
