Food riots grip western Venezuela, mob reportedly slaughters cattle in field

SAN CRISTOBAL/BARINAS, Venezuela, Jan 11 (Reuters) – Hungry mobs ransacked a food collection center, and a supermarket in Venezuela’s western Andean state of Merida on Thursday and reportedly even slaughtered cattle grazing in a field as unrest over food shortages spread through the country.

An opposition lawmaker from Merida, Carlos Paparoni, said four people had died and 10 were injured in the chaos over the last two days, but he did not specify the circumstances.

Four years of recession and the world’s highest inflation have plunged millions of Venezuelans into poverty, and President Nicolas Maduro’s authoritarian socialist regime faces mounting unrest.

When a mob slaughters Maduro in the streets, then they’ll be getting somewhere.

Silence. They haven’t figured out how to blame it on the Jews yet.

Socialism remakes Lord Of The Flies.

    • Watchman

Hollywood must be hoping the female remake of Lord of the Flies movie isn’t going to be affected by a real life version being played out in Venezuela. Of course this remake is as likely to be about as successful as the female remake of Ghostbusters, and for the same reasons.

I truly do not see the problem. Viva La!

On the other hand, the Maduro diet has everyone looking slim and trim.

Someone’s got to make the sacrifice for Venezuela and provide the aspirational example of both having enough to eat and having enough toilet paper to clean up.

      • Bless his heart

Sharia does not require toilet paper. For what its worth.

        • Watchman

A Turkish guide said they still use toilet paper to dry their hands after ablutions, but I don’t know if this was a city Muslim quirk just in Turkey.

Well I hope nobody calls it a shithole. That would upset people.

To the hypersensitive classes it may seem imprudent or impolitic to refer to places like this as Scheiß Lochen but, hell, if the shoe fits…

    • Watchman

They’re well below ‘sh!thole’ status at this stage of Socialism.

  • This will happen in Canada sooner than we think.

The Toronto Star is helping Ontario along that path. It has a story today demanding that Tim Horton’s employees become unionized. Because what we need in Ontario are donut shops that charge 20 dollars for a coffee and are only open five hours a day.

      • Hey! If they want to lose their jobs, I won’t stand in their way.

      • Watchman

‘Coffee Grinder Specialist’, ‘Hot Water Specialist’ and ‘Beverage Container Filling Specialist’ are three jobs requiring separate jobs and apparently be filled by three separate union member positions due to the exacting health and safety ramifications. Any attempt to force employees to cross over and perform the task of another specialist position will result in a union led strike on safety concerns. /sarc

I was traveling through Illinois today and stopped to get fuel, I thought that I would stop in the McDonalds next door for a plain cheeseburger ( I know but I don’t do it often) and they had the self order kiosk in the building instead of a regular counter. They had a kid showing people how to order, now they could barely get my order right when I was giving it at the counter and I am supposed to believe they can teach someone to use this new system? I left and went back to the gas station and got a cold cut sandwich.

Wynne will turn Tim Horton’s into a provincial crown corporation & than argue for the next step in “wage fairness” that Tim Horton employees earn the same amount as Doctors, Engineers.

    Socialism is as socialism does.

Take and the well runs dry and the food ends.

I recall a friend told me that he had his milk producing herd slaughtered in Cuba during the beginning of the revolution. The commissar said the people were hungry.

There went that great ongoing milk production.

Socialism eats the next crop’s planting seed. And eats the calving cattle that bear the future meat supply.

Let them eat the grass that the cattle turned into food when the cattle are all gone. Go vegan. Or they might eat the long pig.

    • Tooth&Claw

That will happen. See Ukraine early 20th century.

      • Bless his heart

Ukraine was intentional. The Soviets demanded all of their crops and left them none to eat. Then they killed the “rich” kulaks who produced too little and replaced them with people ignorant about farming. The foor grown the next season were horrible. The smaller yield of crops were taken. Even more starved. It was an intentional genocide. Millions died.

Competent independent farmers were a threat to central authority, I believe.

And Maggy Thatcher was right about that running out of other people’s money bit.

        • Tooth&Claw

Yes I am aware. Venezuela will go the same way though. Farmers will be painted as the enemy.

    • Watchman

Wait, are you telling me that Margaret Thatcher might have been absolutely correct when she stated, “The problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money”?

  • Killer Marmot

I’m beginning to suspect that socialist economic systems don’t work particularly well.

    • Watchman

“That wasn’t real Socialism” will be the inevitable excuse, implying that is the speaker was given total control it would magically work (for the first time ever).

How long will it be before Venezuela goes full Liberia? Maybe the people of Venezuela can take Maduro “out for dinner”.

That was a good documentary. Daily Mail had an article a couple of years ago on General Butt Naked who had apparently reformed from his fighting days. I couldn’t find the second part of the Vice video.
