Ex-NSA Hacker Is Building an AI To Find Hate and Far-Right Symbols on Twitter and Facebook

Crose’s motivation is to expose white nationalists who use more or less obscure, mundane, or abstract symbols—or so-called dog whistles—in their posts, such as the Black Sun and certain Pepe the frog memes. Crose’s goal is not only to expose people who use these symbols online but hopefully also push the social media companies to clamp down on hateful rhetoric online.

Does “All I want for Christmas is white genocide”, and “behead those who insult the prophet” count as hateful rhetoric?

    • Nope. Right wing speech and symbols only.

The problem with rooting out ‘hate’ is that one man’s hate is another man’s fight for expression.

Hate is subjective and like all things subjective, the question arises who gets to decide whose hatred is worse than another. In other words, such activities are power grabs and exercises in thought control.

There are laws against assault. There are laws against defamation. There are laws against libel. There are laws against inciting an riot. These are all actions that can cause harm. All definable in a court of law and subject to proofs.

Thoughts are malleable and changeable according to mood. They are also formed and informed by one’s experience of the world. Defining them is like pinning jello to a wall.

That has not stopped people from trying to punish wrong-thinkers rather than wrong-doers. Just ask anyone who has had to defend themselves at the hands of the Stasi or closer to home, in front of any Human Rights or Human Resources tribunal.

There are people out there who see Orwell’s 1984 not as a warning but as a how-to manual. This ex-NSA hacker is one of them.

Thank you Mr Henderson. A perfect analysis of all that’s wrong with Crose’s project. We have to push back at this concept of “words as violence” and hurt feelings as best we can.
