Iranian Christians Outraged Over Claim They Are ‘Not Being Persecuted In Any Way’

An Iranian Christian news agency expressed outrage Monday over a bishop’s claim that Christians are completely free and unmolested by Iran’s government.

Mohabat News, which describe themselves as “Bible-believing Christians who believe in propagating the word of God,” took issue with Armenian-Orthodox Bishop of Tehran, Sibo Sarkisian’s recent claim that Christians in Iran “enjoy complete freedom of religion under the Islamic Republic of Iran and are not being persecuted in any way,” according to The Christian Post.

Sarkisian made the claim in a Dec. 19 interview with Spanish news agency EFE, and said that he did not believe Iran’s laws oppressed Christians since he did not believe in evangelism.

I would say that it is an example of Stockholm Syndrome, but had to think about it for a short time before agreeing that this syndrome remains as relevant as ever if not even more so these days and likely to become even more so in the future.

They may not be free by western standards but the fact that they have a Christian news service and over 300 active Churches in a Muslim majority country is remarkable. In Saudi Arabia (our great ally) there are no churches and Christianity is forbidden. Egypt has a Christian community but because Egypt is Sunni , Churches in that country are regularly bombed. I have never heard of a Church in Iran being bombed. I suppose the only better place to live for Christian’s in that part of the world is Syria and Lebanon.
