New Year’s Eve in Times Square sounds like a urine-soaked hell

Standing on your feet for hours during the freezing cold, not having a single sip of water because there’s no restroom to relieve yourself, and being crushed on all sides by strangers sounds hellish — but some 2 million people do it willingly every year.

I admit to being mystified by the attraction.

Chinese people love this kind of thing.

It sounds like the kind of tightly packed crowds with limited exits that crazed jihadi gunmen prefer… no thanks.

Been there, done that, never need to do it again!!

A buddy of mine had been down a bunch of times, and he always wanted someone to go with and they always backed out at the last minute, so he went by himself. I casually told him I would go, not thinking he was serious, but he was so I and my new bride, went with him.

We left southern Ontario at about 4 am and drove to a commuter train station in New Jersey and then took the train into Manhattan, arriving in Times Square at about 6 pm. This was the year after 9/11, so security was pretty tight. They pen people into cages so that they can keep the intersections open. We managed to get a spot close enough that we could see the stage and The Ball, and then stood there for six hours freezing our toes and dying to go to the washroom.

As soon as the ball dropped we left the square, found a restaurant to use the washroom mostly, but ended up staying for coffee and cake before getting the train back to New Jersey then the ten hour drive home. We were on the go for about 36 hours non stop. It’s not something I need to do again.

Some LSD, speed or mescaline may have salvaged this road trip from hell.

    People can be idiots.
I could hardly imagine a more complete waste of an evening.

Times Square at New Years sound like an occasion for masochists only.

One of those things people want to say they did.

I would rather stay home and stick pins in my eyes.
