Many Unanswered Questions about Amtrak Crash and Vegas Shooting

So the Amtrak train that derailed in Washington state Monday was speeding at 80 mph when it was limited to 30 mph. As Sharyl Attkisson neatly tweeted, why hasn’t somebody asked the driver?

The train derailed at the first decent curve in the track for a considerable distance after getting up to speed. First run with paying passengers. Engineer distracted and so missed seeing the slow down sign by the track? Seems plausible.

Took the high speed train from Paris to Avignon when I was in France. The track was basically straight the whole way. Maybe Amtrak should have paid more attention.

That happened a dozen years ago in Queensland to a train for which I designed the bogies (Cairns Tilt Train), so I took a particular interest in the case. It turned out that the driver lost the sense of where he was and where he was was on a long 160 kph straight that fed into a 60 kph curve. He couldn’t slow down in time and ended up taking the curve at 120 kph. This being narrow gauge it couldn’t support the lateral accelerations. On standard gauge a train can go twice the posted speed on a curve without necessarily derailing.

The Las Vegas investigator from the FBI said that their final report would be done by October next year.

Another year over what was supposedly just one guy acting on his own with no help, not even in getting the weapons and ammo to his suites. And we’re still waiting for the release of security footage of the guy from inside the hotel.

    What a load.

Shhhhhsh! You are not supposed to consider Mohammedan thought processes as said Mohammedan drives into a 30 mp/h (signposted) corner at 80 mp/h.

This is our present, and future. Not good. We seriously need to eradicate ALL of these pricks – whether repatriation to their country of origin, or extermination. No other choice. The “MODERATE” Islamofascists can get the fuck out, and go back to their shit-hole of origin.

The others – round them up and gas them – no other choice.

This phrase from the article where he mentions the Bundy Ranch case stood out: “U.S. Bureau of Land Management snipers”. They train with the Department of Education SWAT team?

So, simple questions for the derailment:
was the locomotive equipped with TripOptimizer (or an equivalent)?
was it in use at the time of the accident?
how many trip did the engineer have at speed on this route?
who was in the cab with the engineer (engineer and conductor? engineer and engineer? engineer and random people? engineer alone?)
was the speed restrictions signs posted?
who did the engineer review the D.O.B (or TGBO) with prior to the trip?
what indication did the last signal he passed give?
what was missing from activating the PTC system in that stretch of track?
who authorized operation with the PTC not in service?
were you able to recover cab recorder footage?
did the engineer pass a D&A test after the incident?
what throttle and brake position was applied at the time of the accident?

all of this will come out in the report, which is going to take a while to complete, (similar to the incident in burlington with the via – R12T0038)
