Texas restaurant defends ‘racist’ sign that says ‘Coon Chicken Inn’ with a man in blackface by suggesting it is ‘a symbol of American history’

A Texas restaurant defended a sign that was deemed racist by users on social media.

The Lubbock food joint, Cook’s Garage, has displayed the sign in the front of the restaurant that reads: ‘Coon Chicken Inn’ in the teeth of a black-faced man.

  • I am not a PC whiner.

But this seems a little over the line.

    • He didn’t think this through;)

      Totally agree with both statements.

    Pushback?
    Good!

Racist or not, the sign is not appetizing for a restaurant. Chow houses are supposed to be about the food.

    • Good point.

It’s supposed to look like an old garage.

Really? A negro in a bellboy hat does not suggest auto mechanics.

And an old garage isn’t exactly appetizing either. Big fail on messaging here.

There was an old dinner or grill where I used to live called Hudson’s (like the defunct car brand) that was done up that way.
It’s been a popular look for diners for the last 50 or so years here in the states.
It actually had what looked like a Hudson car coming through the ceiling.
Neat place, good food for a grill, positive memories, closed a dozen years ago from what I can read.

That is a lot of antique bling there! It looks like an interesting road stop.

Lots of old looking (likely all reproduction) neon signs.

          • shasta

            “likely all reproduction”

Never thought of that; guess i’m not devious enough. I suppose with the price of originals going up that there would be a good market for copies.

Yeah, almost all “antique” gas pumps that you have seen in the last 35-40 years are all reproductions.
The real ones are all in sorry condition and are lacking many original parts.
Almost the same thing with the old neon and other ‘noble gas’ signs.

That makes two of us. I still regret the day Sambo’s restaurant closed its doors.

Sambo wasn’t even black, he was Eastern Indian.
There is ONE Sambo’s left in Santa Barbara with all the old Jungle Book decorations.

Bingo! Never apologize or give in to these cretins.

Without even tasting the food, I give this joint 2 thumbs-down.
