Open letter accuses non-Indigenous artist of cultural appropriation

Victoria-based artist Carey Newman published the open letter this week on Facebook in response to statements by Vancouver Island artist Sue Coleman on Facebook and in a CBC report. Coleman, who is not Indigenous, has described herself as a “translator” of Indigenous art forms.

What a load of complete bullshit. I should have known. Silly hats are always a tip-off that genuine ‘stability’ is elusive for some…..

Silly hat man is the one who claimed the non-indigenous woman is appropriating. of course the better question is why now? why not years ago when she first started after meeting with his father?

This is an outrage! A crying Trudeau should offer an apology on behalf of all Canadians, and financial compensation to all indians in Canada. A cross country 56 million dollar commission should also be launched.

Her art has fallen out of political favor and so now she must be denounced.

They sure like appropriating our cash, though.

I’ve never been a fan of indigenous art and I wouldn’t pay $50 for the piece showing in the article, well maybe as a filler…. in the corner of my garage. Instead of resonating with my sense of harmony it sort clangs and jangles my nerves. That said, she should say ‘I’m not appropriating your culture, I’m immitating your ‘art’ and nobody owns an art form”. In a sane world, everyone involved would sit down and smoke the peace pipe and get over themselves. But minorities are more into beat-downs than compromising.

The motivation for this ‘complaint’ is obvious. Anyone notice how much a single piece of Coleman’s art is selling for? A lot, LOT more than anything Newman does.

  • Allan

Tell them to go straight to hell. He’s PROMOTING, indigenous art you morons, NOT disrespecting it. The more people see the beauty of indigenous art the more it is appreciated. What a bunch of snowflake asshats.

It’s time for a musical interlude.

I own a half dozen west coast Arapaho masks…..they’re truly beautiful art…..superb carving.
Having said that I’m sorry to say the cosplaying fool needs to loosen his hatband.
I’m basically a mick but I look more injun than that fakir.
So basically he can get stuffed.

Part of the reason I love Heavy Metal is that it’s probably the only sub-genre of Rock that has managed to completely throw off the shackles of its early Blues influence… It’s music by white people, for white people (along with Classical, Country, and traditional European ‘Folk’ music).

But yet, for some reason, no one complains when non-whites play Metal… Maybe it’s because whites aren’t assholes!
