One dead & five injured after two groups aged 12 to 16 ‘cross paths’ and open fire on Cleveland street

A child has been killed and five others injured in a gunfight on a Cleveland street.

The children, all of whom were aged 12 to 16, were in two separate groups when the shots began at 7.30pm on Friday night. All are boys.

It is not clear what prompted the fight. Police say they do not believe the youths belonged to gangs but that they merely ‘crossed paths’.

The age of the boy who died has not been released.

The other five were taken to hospital.

I search my memories and yet cannot remember ever getting into a real gunfight with actual guns and live ammo in my early teenage years. I fear that this might be the signs of an early dementia if I think this type of thing is outrageous and rare when the police seem to be treating it as a normal part of growing up.

I caught part of “This American Life” on NPR today. It was a piece about Harold Washington, the first black mayor of Chicago from 1983-87 (died in office). What struck me is that his supporters admit that his administration made little improvement in the lives of blacks or whites in Chicago and in some measureable ways things got worse. But none of that matters. Like Obama he’s seen as the Black Messiah. An aspirational figure, almost a god. People were no better off and some were worse, but they felt better about it. It was a Golden City on the Hill, a shabby not well functioning city. A purgatory, really. An Sartre-like existential hell we could feel good about.

I think that’s what is happening across the country. Detroit, Flint, Ferguson, Baltimore, Camden, Cleveland, and on and on and on. Cities that are failing badly but that for reasons having nothing to do with failure, are celebrated for their great achievements, whatever those are. The less things succeed the more we cheer. Now we have armed 12 year olds roving the streets at 730pm on a Friday in November the day after Thanksgiving shooting each other for no sane reason. The city of the future is here.
