Top nuclear commander: I wouldn’t carry out an ‘illegal’ nuclear strike order from Trump

Air Force Gen. John Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, said at the Halifax International Security Forum in Halifax, Nova Scotia, that he would tell Trump he couldn’t carry out an illegal strike, CBS News reported.

Trump has never – never – threatened to use nuclear weapons. North Korea, on the other hand, has repeatedly said they would nuke the US homeland and its territories. Hyten is obviously a political operator and is probably going to be unemployed soon.

I thought a couple of blog posts ago Trump was supposed to be an Autocrat, with ultimate power to do whatever he likes? I think this shows how rabid and exaggerated this ‘autocrat’ claim was by the left. If Trump was such an autocrat this Air Force General would be arrested and relieved of command, and yet he is not.

This differentiates a democracy from a tyranny: the ability to refuse illegal orders. In this case its just virtue signalling by a politically appointed General.

I think this man is to dumb for his Job, there are better then him.

    • Clausewitz

He will not follow orders in a time of war. Cashier his sorry ass like yesterday.

      • vwVwwVwv

In the USSR military officers had a handgun as a sidearm, a TT or Makarov,
it was given to them so they could avoid being sacked and
get the family punished bei committing suiside,
It’s more comfortable with a handgun.
I am not sure why I write
        this but…. LOL

This is Fake News / Non News. No US / Western military officer is required to carry out illegal orders.

    • Watchman

And no officer needs to publicly announce this beforehand: it’s a given. The Nuremberg Trials set into stone that ‘I was just following orders’ is not an adequate defence against illegal orders or war crime orders.

  • canminuteman

There are a bunch of points here. I would expect a general to refuse an illegal order. The problem then becomes, who gets to decide if the order is illegal or not. The army is supposed to keep out of politics and this guy is grandstanding for political reasons and should be fired.

    • mobuyus

The enemy with their western mascots decide what an illegal order is.

    • andycanuck

Even if not grandstanding as per Thinking From First Principles, below, if he’s too stupid not to recognize a “gotcha” question aimed at attacking the C-in-C, he’s not bright enough to be given any public-interaction duties at all and should be riding a desk back in D.C. with his mouth shut.

He ought to be tossed to fast he leaves a skid mark.

  • It’s a back-handed way of slandering someone — he’s assuming that Trump would do something rash and “illegal”.

If Trump were to respond in kind, he could day something like: “If Air Force Gen. John Hyten loses any more air crews in crashes this year, I firing him for criminal incompetence”.

And it’s pure projection — described as a mental disorder under “Factitious Disorders” in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illness). Apparently the Left has found a way to use it as a political tactic. There is nothing the progressive fanatics will not appropriate for political purposes, including mental illness.

  • Thinking From First Principles

I haven’t been able to find the full interview on video, but CBS has more of the conversation and this quote shows that he’s not grandstanding … and is actually showing the world that the US nuclear forces are rationally controlled.

“I provide advice to the president, he will tell me what to do,” Hyten
added. “And if it’s illegal, guess what’s going to happen? I’m going to
say, ‘Mr. President, that’s illegal.’ And guess what he’s going to do?
He’s going to say, ‘What would be legal?’ And we’ll come up with
options, with a mix of capabilities to respond to whatever the situation
is, and that’s the way it works. It’s not that complicated.”

And I’m proud to be an American where we have this sort of system and leadership.

Obama leftovers, ‘deep state’, media etc.. throwing kitchen sink at Trump
..endless for nest 3 years ..

    • Clausewitz

The real knee slapper is that Obama illegally sent the military into warlike situations without first consulting Congress like it say in the Constitution on quite a few occasions.

  • moraywatson

Sorry, but this is FAKE NEWS. What is the definition of an “illegal” nuclear strike. And why is there any presumption that if Trump ordered a nuclear strike it would be an “illegal” one?

    • Yo Mama

According to Barack Obummer any nuclear strike that ain’t against Isreal.
