Russia prepares to label US media as ‘foreign agents’

Russia is preparing “reciprocal measures” against US media after Washington ordered Kremlin-backed news Russia Today to register as a foreign agent.

Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, said Friday he had ordered a committee to develop a counter-response “to allow us to take steps to protect the citizens of our country and our country itself from overt interference” of US media in Russia.

The US Justice Department has ordered RT to register as an agent of a foreign government by November 13, its editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan said Thursday. Simonyan said that RT will comply, otherwise she could be arrested and the news outlet’s accounts frozen.

… so should Trump

This is in response to the ridiculous move by the US Justice Dept to require RT and Sputnik to register as foreign agents. I find on many topics the news coverage from these Russian outlets is more honest than western media. When it comes to breaking news I find RT often scoops its western competitors. Of course I don’t tune into RT and expect to see criticism of Putin and his policies. It has it’s biases just like EVERY other media outlet.

Why doesn’t Washington require the CBC and BBC to register as foreign agents? During the 2016 election both of these government owned outlets published reports very critical of Donald Trump in essence trying to effect the outcome of the U.S. election.

It’s disappointing to see the State Dept under Donald Trump pushing this anti-Russian narrative hatched by the Democrats. It’s clear that Trump has no control over the State Dept or for that matter any of the major levers of power. He is like a hostage President.

These moves against RT and Sputnik along with the push to get social media giants to censor “fake news” are part of a grand plan to limit what people can view as news. If it continues American’s will soon be able to only view news approved by the government – just like in the old Soviet Union.

  • And what about Canada’s State broadcaster the CBC? Shouldn’t they be labelled as a “foreign agent”? There’s a heck of a lot more propaganda coming out of the CBC which is why I rarely if ever watch it. Not that I’m a regular consumer of RT either, but at least they come out with something interesting once in a while and there’s plenty of other sources where you can fact-check and balance it out. Not so the CBC, or any of the large Canadian MSM networks for that matter — they all follow the same template.
