Court reverses conviction of US Marine who urinated on dead Taliban fighters

A former US Marine sentenced for urinating on the corpses of Afghans believed to be Taliban fighters in 2011 has had his conviction overturned. An appeals court ruled the Marine Commandant, who was seeking harsh punishment for those involved, had interfered in the trial.

The Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals overturned the previous ruling and all charges against Joseph Chamblin were dropped. Wednesday’s ruling comes five years after his initial trial, Military.com reported.

I am glad he got off. I hope they are all exonerated.I can see where the commander was coming from though- It was kind of below the dignity of the Marine Corps.I’d rather see these bastards left with a rasher of bacon stuck in their mouths. Just as much of a deterrent and more dignified.

A stick of bacon in the mouth would show the sacrifice of US troops who would willingly give up such a treasure to help a man deprived of it all his life. It would also be akin to the ancient Greek practice of placing coins over the eyes of their dead as payment for Charon, the ferryman across the river Styx, to help the dead get to where they deserved. In a similar way, the bacon would help the dead get to a place they deserved.

Seeing United States Marines peeing on the corpses of the taliban is always a good thing.

If I was him commanding officer I would have had him charged with “conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline”, and assuming he was found guilty sentenced him to a weekend of confinement to barracks, then sent him on his way. He shouldn’t have done it, and he needed to be told not to do it, but that would have been the end of it.

Once the picture ended up on the Internet, the chance for an appropriate response was over and questions would have been asked at the top level and filtered downwards to find the miscreants and punish them severely.

The difference between could and should … the good thing is they probably got put in the ground rather than (my first choice) their bones picked and spread by regional predators to be (maybe) found by archeology students in a future millennia.

Don’t bury them at all. Leave them where they die for the animals to fight over.
