French feminist anti-harassment phone line harassed into closure after 3 days

French feminists who set up an anti-harassment hotline were forced to shut it down after three days following a campaign of abuse by men.

Activists Clara Gonzales and Elliot Lepers launched the ‘anti-relou’ (anti-annoyance) service on Friday, encouraging women being hassled by men to give out the fake phone number instead of their real one.

But the service was axed on Monday after they received ‘more than 20,000 insulting messages’ over the course of a few hours.

Should I hate myself for laughing at this?

I’m not in favour of such action. It achieves little, and yet provides ammunition for the next funding drive of the Third Wave Feminists. The service should have been allowed to wither on the vine instead of the vine uprooted in an act of vandalism. This case will provide justification for more feminist drives and more fundraising to counter ‘harassment’ when they can show that an anti-harassment phone line was closed due to harassment – even though the spike in calls would almost surely taper off after the first few days.

It would be funny if someone wrote a program to flood one of these hotlines with the text message:

“Hello. It has been detected that you are a feminist. Because of this, we are now flooding your phone lines to prevent you from indoctrinating additional people. This will not stop until you stop.”
