Trudeau does right thing but for wrong reason

The fact Trudeau now intends, albeit belatedly, to keep this promise that he made to voters in 2015 is a good thing.

What’s alarming is that Trudeau didn’t reverse course because it was the right thing to do.

He did it because he and Finance Minister Bill Morneau botched their initial presentation of their small business corporate tax reform plan so badly, the Liberals are worried it’s eating into their popularity, as suggested by several recent polls.

    Mr. Goldstein, a fine writer, spends all of his time dwelling on Liberal tactical mistakes, but he misses two points:

    1. The Liberals, and everyone else, underestimated the effectiveness of the small business lobby. I have always thought the old-styled business lobby was “stodgy”, and the big business lobbies certainly are, but the small business lobbies — and throw in the farm and doctors lobbies — were surprisingly effective. And on top of this Andrew Sheer’s Conservative ads started to run last week, and I think the Libears started to panic;

    2. The last two days both CBC News and the Globe and Mail did separate stories on Bill Morneau sleaze, stories covered fairly well in the pro-Liberal establishment media, but barely mentioned on this BCF site. The Bill Morneau sleade is still a big deal in the media and inside the Ottawa beltway. As one writer has put it, Mr. Morneau is fast losing his political capital. This had a lot to do with the big Liberal back-tracking this week.

      3. If Bill Morneau through his chain of corporations – even unknowingly – profits as the result of laws he introduces, he should resign not only as minister, but also as MP.

    Trudeau, a man with a shovel.
    He can’t stop digging…

    The media is excited this morning that a new poll shows that most Canadians think feminist Trudeau is wonderful. The words most used to describe him in the poll are modern and charismatic.

    Now it is obvious that for Bill Morneau to become minister of finance has been a business opportunity.

      That’s what a lot of people who know about Morneau Shepell have been saying for some time.

  • Right thing?

    No, he was found out and walked back from extreme taxation. He will try again as soon as possible.

    It’s time for a diverting nonpolitical musical interlude.
