I’m sure it seemed like a great idea on paper.

Worse? No, both are extremely bad decisions.

    Arrrr !!
The Weapons Officer, no less ! One of the smartie pants !

  • Dave

“A group of officers threatened to resign” Ha! They were just pissed they didn’t get a piece. Whiny wankers.

    • Ed

Who knew if something displeasing occurs in the armed forces you can just resign.

      “Go over that hill, soldier!”

      “No thanks sir, I’m resigning.”

Anyone who’s been in the military (or in corporations) would understand that the other officers were worrying that they might be commanded by a sublieutenant in actual practice, and not commanded by the Captain of the sub.

I’m pretty sure I lost a job to this type of nepotism as I was working with a woman who was married to my boss’s boss and she had a strong a disliking of me and her supervisor. Both of us were the only ones made redundant as we both refused to kowtow to her poor work attitude and performance. Unfortunately she was untouchable as her husband was two levels directly above her in the organisation and her supervisor’s reports and concerns were ignored by his boss as his boss reported directly to the husband. In essence we felt that the wife was running the department because she was married to someone upwards in the chain of command.

I served on boats like the Vigilant for the better part of two decades, and knew that something like this would happen as soon as females were allowed to serve on these vessels. If mixed-gender crews are going to be permitted on submarines, everyone involved needs to keep their flies zipped while on duty.

The last thing you want as an officer on a submarine is some illicit love triangle coming apart while you are several hundred feet below the surface of the ocean. “Morale killer” doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Saw the same thing with the Canadian Coast Guard.

She was only an Admiral’s daughter but her naval base was full of discharged seamen.

Of Churchill’s reference to the naval traditions of “rum, sodomy and the lash,” one of them seems to still be alive and well.

    • Marius K

      What happened to rum ?

      • Watchman

Replaced by an extra serving of sodomy, I presume.

Sex was not unknown in port when the RN had wooden-hulled warships.
Hence the expression “show a leg”.

This is what is bound to destroy the British Navy morale. Remember Winston Churchill’s three things that made British Navy great: “rum, buggery and cat’o nine tails”.

    Ah, the Royal Navy.
There was some incident a few years back (U.S. Navy) where the Captain had a mental crack up and wouldn’t leave his cabin for days on end and effectively handed control over to his girlfriend who was one of the fellow officers. That was a weird one.

If this sound comes from the Officers’ quarters, you know you have a problem:

So, here we have two adults, educated, trained, ‘smarter than the average bear’, and yet cannot resist carnal desires.

What is inevitably going to happen now with girls allowed in the Boy Scouts? Who believes that they will be more celibate?
