Toronto is cracking down on little free libraries

A senior citizen who faces $100 in fines for having free books on his Toronto property is the result of “bureaucratic bullcrap,” according to his daughter – and lots of angry people on Facebook agree.

Libraries are an anachronism. Books are cheap, and all information is available for free on your phone.

    • Clausewitz

What exactly is the point you’re trying to make??

      • Tom Forsythe

That we don’t need publicly funded libraries, anymore. Shut the whole system down.

        • Exile1981

This was a private library they tried to shut down

          • Tom Forsythe

            Because they hate competition.

          • Clink9

Last night on the news the city had already backed down and let the books stay.

        • Clausewitz

          Really? Well opinions vary.

          • Tom Forsythe

A lot of people are emotionally attached to libraries. For a couple centuries, they were essential to learning. Now, they are just a place for smelly homeless men to spend the day.

Kathleen Wynne comments that pending video game “Dirty Chinese Restaurant” is racist and “has no place in Ontario.

      Don’t tell Katsmeat Kinsella!

Three comments so far, none of which even attempts to address the issue of a bureaucracy gone nutz!
The Little Library movement has gone international. From the samples I’ve personally seen, they set a very high standard for craftsmanship and style (mostly in Victoria, BC). My own municipality wants me to have a permit and get it inspected (if it’s on City property, ie the boulevard.)

you will need to install bike racks and a cistern for muslims to wash their feet

Hard to find more totalitarian than jumped-up petty bureaucrats.

That was my first reaction. The “complaint” excuse is too easy and you can use the old privacy canard if pressed on the particulars of the complainant, so some bitter control freak having a bad day at work can run roughshod over a citizen for something as harmless as a Little Free Library. Having dealt with it on a few occasions, in various cities and towns, the world of municipal regulations and bylaws is such a crass, petty, little empire.

      • Alain

        Amen to that.

In my area in Toronto there are a few parks and 4 school that include K-12 . I know of 4 of these Commune sheltered book storage items.
During the nice weather from April to October it is normal at Month-End to see that many people that are Moving from a Rental Unit in the multi-dwelling Houses will put a small box of books , CD’s and DVD’s on the edge of the lawn or Driveway entrance.

Who cares if that same person put those books in a large Doll House with the door missing and then nailed it to their Fence Post.

There’s a little parkette just South of me and the Locals want to have a Spring clean-up day. but the City Coun. told the people that they can’t do it because of the 416 CUPE outside workers that have to do it.
Okay……but recently the same City put up a sign to warn people that the area is not maintained for the walkways and to use at your own Risk. I was about 8 years ago we had the Playground crisis for “dangerous” slides or wooden Play structures. The play area for kids was torn down and replaced with the safe Plastic based structures and metal pipe supports or stairs.
But now , the parkette was fenced off on Wednesday with a notice the whole area is being improved and getting a new kiddies pool.
Great……it will be ready for December and the pool won’t open for almost 7 months as the sand box will take 4-5 months .

The City is $5 billion in debt as it cries poor to Wynne and Trudeau but then became a Sanctuary City that currently has over 300,000 illegals that Wynne said would get FREE Health care while Joe Mehivc said they are entitled to Welfare and housing .
Now we see that Trudeau took in 25,000 migrants in the guise of refugees and then told the 7,000,000,000 people outside canada that the Liberals will welcome them as Global Citizens because Diversity is canada’s strength.

City Hall is now using tax dollar to obsess on an elevated box that holds books that are for children .

!…(light goes on!!) I hadn’t made the connection.

      • DaninVan

No, no, no! I meant that for Clausewitz…this blog REALLY needs an edit button. *embarrassment*

    • WalterBannon

Diversity is an ethnic cleansing policy of genocide

  • Clausewitz

Helping to spread literacy is obviously against Liberal policy. Keep em stupid, keep em voting Liberal.

    • WalterBannon

competition with our “public” union overlords by free volunteers in the actual real public is verboten

  • Brenda

I hope this isn’t a trend, I’ve got one of these in my neighbourhood.

On the plus side, that post in blogTO has 83 comments, most of which are a totally irrelevant fight about Uber and racism. And I thought blog TO had banned comments after someone made a Bruce Jenner joke.

    • lolwut? (Deplorable Hoser)

It’s happened in other cities in Canada and the USA, they always end up backing down.

  • Hard Little Machine

    Stuff them with Korans.

  • terrence22

Well, it did not take too long for Tarana to back down – Free Libraries are now accepted in the center of the universe. http://www.blogto.com/arts/2017/09/toronto-about-face-free-little-library-closure/

  • Librarian

Stay off my fucking corner with your ‘little free library’. That’s my business and I’ll cut anyone using these frauds.

    • Clink9

You must have a new handle for every topic.

Too bad these community book boxes aren’t in places that the local residents actually need to use them like Jane & Finch or Malvern. I always see these in places like the beaches or Forest Hill.
