That degree in Wimmins studies not paying off?…Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars

Facing poverty, academics turn to sex work and sleeping in cars

There is nothing she would rather do than teach. But after supplementing her career with tutoring and proofreading, the university lecturer decided to go to remarkable lengths to make her career financially viable.

She first opted for her side gig during a particularly rough patch, several years ago, when her course load was suddenly cut in half and her income plunged, putting her on the brink of eviction. “In my mind I was like, I’ve had one-night stands, how bad can it be?” she said. “And it wasn’t that bad.”

The wry but weary-sounding middle-aged woman, who lives in a large US city and asked to remain anonymous to protect her reputation, is an adjunct instructor, meaning she is not a full-time faculty member at any one institution and strings together a living by teaching individual courses, in her case at multiple colleges.

Clearly this is a job for government!

To make government more, it should create a department within every area of department specifically to employ gender studies graduates to investigate gender and queer studies as it relates to every function within all levels of government.

This should bring government to its pinnacle!

Makes sense. Our little Justin is a feminist and he whores himself to muslims all the time. And I see the media is reporting that not only was feminist Trudeau trying to buy used fighter jets from Australia, he was also trying to buy used jets from Kuwait. Yes our little feminist is on the search for the best priced used junk he can find for our military.

If any of the adjuncts in the story looked anything close to what the three in the pic look like…I daresay they wouldn’t still be adjuncts and making >$40K/yr…they’d be high-priced escorts commanding six-figure incomes…Just sayin’ as a red-blooded, straight male.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say they probably don’t.

Every high school should include “Budgeting” so students can learn “it’s not how much you make, but how much you keep”. Learning how to save and how to invest are essential skills. Since the 1970s there were PhD’s driving cabs and today, Uber drivers are able to make a living to support their family. Anyone who loves academia that much can do research in their spare time if working at a uni doesn’t pay.

“I feel committed to being the person who’s there to indoctrinate help millennials, the next generation, go on to become mindless anti-fa drones critical thinkers,” she said. “Except I would not know how to be a critical thinker if my life depended on it.”

Either this was written from the outset as an “oppressed wimminz” piece or the author didn’t look, find or want to include them because it would have weakened the pathos but there is a definite lack of STEM adjuncts, or men adjuncts for that matter, in the article. Wonder why that is.

    • Norman_In_New_York

There are plenty of men adjuncts. Colleges are burdened with tenured professors who earn huge salaries for teaching four hours a week, claim they need the idle time for research to write articles in esoteric journals that nobody reads, and can’t be fired for this indolence.

I know. I was just commenting on how the article highlighted only poor women adjuncts.

  • Hard Little Machine

This is a problem across the spectrum of nearly EVERY discipline. Adjuncts are piecework drudges who often make less than minimum wage. The only reason anyone should consider doing it is on a part time basis post retirement.

Oldest profession. Wonder how long it will last once robotic, silicone imitators populate the field.

I think that’s how Japan finally will take over the world.

Butterflies would rather die than degrade themselves like that for money.

If wymmyn’s studies isn’t working out for her, she could always try being an ISIS wife.

I’m pretty sure the guy in the picture is Brandon Wade, the owner of Seeking Arrangement, the dating service for sugar daddies and sugar babies. But that picture is not in the guardian article. Does the article relate in any way to Seeking Arrangement? Wade always made a big deal about how being a sugar baby would be a great gig for college girls.
