Merkel’s Pyrrhic Victory: Worst Party Performance Since 1949 As Populist AfD Beat Expectations

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has emerged with the largest party in Germany’s national election but has lost well over a million voters as the anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) has come a solid third in the race, beating previous expectations.

If Merkel’s CDU/CSU forms the same coalition as in the previous government with Schulz’s second placed SPD socialists, then AfD while only holding about a sixth of the seats will be the official opposition.

If Alternative for Germany (AfD) is not part of the governing coalition, then I’m not sure how this matters.
Merkel’s Party and the number two party are 53% of the seats; they can still do whatever they want.
    I’m not sure this matters.

      No idea of German system?
The people are fed up, the coalition partners have suffered hard.
It is possible she can’t get a coalition together.
The SPD refuses to this and
      The greens with the
      FDP are an
explosive coalition, especially with the CSU part of Merkels Party.

It can happen that this is a loss not a victory and it would be a
      Relief for German politics.

        That’s a HUGE maybe.
Hey, I’m happy the AfD did as well as they did, but unless they are pulling in at least twice what they just did, I don’t see them staying relevant.
        …and I hope that I’m wrong.

The valuable thing about the AFD is that it is made out of the conservative
voters of the CDU/CSU, Merkels party before She turned it to the LEFT.

The overwhelming part of the CDU/CSU is not aware what Merkel did as She
became the Party Boss. They see own Political Values abandoned, while
Leftist Agendas get praised and fulfilled, what literally destroyed the FDP
Liberal Democrats, who have been CDU/CSU’s traditional left side coalition
partners, by swallowing up their positions and voters, and now the same
          with Green and SPD positions.

The victories in 4 elections made the Loyal conservative mum and partly
proud but she left the right side of the Party, the Basis of Christian democracy
fall under the bus, what created the AFD.

Germany’s Problems will not be solved by the AFD, no matter how much I
and others will support it, they can be solved only by the return of the
CDU/CSU to their own position by abandoning harmful
leftist Merkelism and leave leftism to the left.

AfD at least now has an official forum.

Germans do never revolt against government, it never worked out well for them.
They had revolts from the 16th to the 20th century, it was a mess.
Germany will move as the last of the EU country’s.

That’s the way to do it.

      God bless the Russians!!! 😉

She got one point more than Hitler did in 1932

    Go go AFD

  • Merkel’s days in German politics may be counted… it is not at all sure that she will manage to form a viable government. Her only real choice, to my mind, is to form a coalation with the FDP and the AfD – i.e. to veer sharp right. The Greens in Germany are actually far left and would not get on with the right wing FDP.
