Storm over ‘pride in WW2 soldiers’ remarks in Germany

A candidate of Germany’s right-wing nationalist party has said the country should “be proud of” its soldiers in both world wars and people should no longer “reproach” Germans for World War Two.

Alexander Gauland’s words have been met with some scorn. What pride are Germans likely to muster for the Wehrmacht?

Germany is “very devoted to a discussion of its past”, Andrew Cohen, a Canadian journalist and professor, tells the BBC.

“I have not seen a country anywhere that is as committed to a frank and painful discussion of its history as Germany is.”

Germans are responsible for some of the most amazing parts of our culture, Literature ,Beer , wines, art, Music ,chemistry, optics philosophy and so on.i still find it hard to forgive Tyrolean hats though, why have a shaving brush built into the hat band? ridiculous

      • But not the SS.

Maybe I shouldn’t weigh in on the hats.

      • canminuteman

What if you need to shave while you are out mountain climbing? You sure would look foolish if you didn’t have a shaving brush in your hat!

        • ntt1

          point, but still…

Gauland was never more than a 3. Class Politican.
There is an stupid cuz wrong idea in the German right
that while the SS did horrible things the army known
as Wehrmacht stayed somehow clean and straight.
They still can’t accept what the German army
    did in 1939 – 1945.

    • ntt1

yep and I have heard stories of what was done to captured German pows not the nation wide industrialized murder the third reiche ran but on a much smaller scale:but every bit the same inhumanity

      • vwVwwVwv

        You actually heared about civilians?
May be even about none Combatants?
You may haven’t heared about revange?

The point is, it was in no way the same.

        • ntt1

no where near the same scale not even close all I’m saying is that kind of evil comes from a very black place in the soul, a skilled manipulative leader could, and did appeal to that darkness in enough people for mass murder to happen. That blackness can be found in all races, and all creeds. it is not just a Germanic thing, look to the horrors of ISIS there is the same murderous hatred but wrapped up in a death cult this time.

          • vwVwwVwv

            Not so much.
ISIS are Barbarians, they have tried to imitate the NAZI and Muhammad.
The average German was better and more educated than the average American
was then. They have been lightyears more civilized than the Muslim nations
today. This is not a Germanic but a German thing, they are very
law obsessed, never questioning the laws or the
Government. When one mixes this with Socialist ideas like NationalSOCIALISM
the German turns in a soldier of the governments idea, on each position he is.
The German Wehrmacht killed in Russia 25-27 million Russians, white,
Christians most of them Civilians, people not much different
then the Wehrmacht Soldier of this time.
In the case of the Jews there was even no language barrier as Yidish is a kind of
a German dialect, only Communists have been capable of similar dehumanizations
of people’s minds and both are Socialist ideology’s.

What the NAZIS have done to the German souls and spirits you can’t do to all nations as easy.

where i grew up in the ex pat Brit ghettos of far west Vancouver i will always remember the mix of old war horses my dad used to assemble , still sick ex pows ex Germans ,poles, Italians and the guy that sold the neighborhood to us ,A Japanese issai who was interned. And of course Brits of varied ranks and locations
War stories were the thing , I remember Dad finding out that a good friend in the municipal government probably was shooting at him at Monte Casino,
it was all in the past , it was old guys swapping “football stories” about when they were 20. there was no glorification of war it was a sombre recollection of failure with massive loss of potential in all the young men wasted.
Should Germany continue to be rebuked? no of course not .The Germans were subject to manipulation and control that lead to their destruction as a Country. The lesson to learn is to early on recognize the growth of foul ideology before it gets a toe hold.
If you are anti war then please take notice of the familiar fascism growing out of our colleges and universities. It should have us all alarmed, the fact that this neofascist movement is making common cause with islam should set all the alarm bells clanging.

    • Alain

Neither the Germans nor really any of the West are willing to recognise the growth of foul ideology before it gets a toe hold. Otherwise we would not tolerate the intolerant totalitarian ideology that has more than a toe hold throughout the West. It is every bit as foul and dangerous as real Nazism.

Why wife’s family is from Augsburg, her parents have lived in Canada since the ’50’s. By family is English, and I had a relative who was a pathfinder pilot in WW11. I don’t know for sure but there is a pretty good chance that my parents/grandparents generation were bombing her parents/grand parents. It’s ancient history to our children. Out our level it was ordinary people on each side doing what they had to do to survive. My wife’s uncle joined the German army at 18 in 1933. It took part in the invasion of Poland and fought in Russia all the way to Moscow. He ended the war as a battalion commander with the rank of captain. When the war ended his family was behind the iron curtain, he became an engineer and emigrated to Canada where he lived an ordinary productive life until he passed on at about 95 years old, as a proud Canadian. It sure is a funny old world.

  • Frances

The old war movies generally portrayed the German armed forces as competent and worthy of respect. Not so the Nazis, who were ridiculed. “The Battle of Britain” is a case in point.

    • Alain

I agree there was a difference and the two should not be lumped together.

Not all Germans were Nazis. Many in the German Army conductes themselves with honor and trully beleived they fought for their counrtries survival. I have a old photograph taken by Allied Soldiers in 1944 of a cousin of my grandfather who died that year fighting during the D day invasion. The Germans took care to respectfully bury Allied soldiers. It was an odd feeling seeing my surname on a grave marker made by a German soldier. Of course the Nazis committed many autrocities. However there were some on whom honor wasnt forgotten on the field of battle.

Nazi Germany gave us the Hitler youth, the basis for how all universities operate today…

  • Gary

I hope Justin sees that photo because his father mocked people that warned about Hitler and nazis.
Pierre thought it was oh so cute and smart to ride around quebec with a German helmet on in the 1930’s . He insisted that Hitler was a problem for the Anglo’s and not France.

Now his IDIOT son insists that the neo fascist Muslims in ISIS are a problem for the USA and Middle east.
This rich kid will get people killed just like his father did to defend Hitler until June of 1940 and then find out in 1946 that the records showed a total of just over 12,000,000 people killed in the death camps.

How many Millions will have to die in canada before this moron will get rid of his Brain-Fog and STOP supporting the radical l pro-sharia mosques that want us DEAD.
