Canada demands U.S. end ‘right to work’ laws as part of NAFTA talks

Canadian negotiators are demanding the United States roll back so-called “right to work” laws – accused of gutting unions in some U.S. states by starving them of money – as part of the renegotiation of the North American free-trade agreement. The request is part of a push by Ottawa to get the U.S. and Mexico to adopt higher labour standards under the deal.

That is not going to go over at all.

  • Starlord

I thought the right to work was state by state, not a federal law. If so we are idiots…

I use to manage a department in the US, right to work state, 1 they hated obamacare, 2. Liked right to work…

Feminist nafta and dicking with state laws we are so screwed.

    • FivePointSpurgeonist

It is a state’s prerogative. They want to frderally mandate a state’s laws.

Yeah, that’s Canadian stupidity for you.

      • Clausewitz

No that’s Justin’s stupidity. As a Canadian of many years experience I fully support right to work legislation. I was a teacher and continually complained that I felt my rights were being abused by the Union using my dues to support political stances that I had no agreement with.

        • My dad felt the same way.

        • DaninVan

Not just the Teachers Unions either; the damn School Board mandarins are every bit as bad.

    • ECM

You are correct–this is how federalism works. That the negotiators are so out of touch that they think the FedGov can force this on the states is an (additional) utter embarrassment as to how out of touch the people they have running the NAFTA effort are–when Trump simply kills NAFTA, they’ll have no one to blame but themselves (and, alas, the Canadians that elected this clown show in Ottawa).

      • Alain

NAFTA must die. Then perhaps it is possible to negotiate bilateral agreements for different items and products. None of this sweeping alll inclusive crap.

        • ECM

As an American inordinately tied to Canada, I agree.

  • Bla Bla

What a moron, talk about the mouse that roared. Yes, Trump is going to give into the comically crazy country of canada with it’s virtue signalling demands – lol.

We love clowns so much up here, we elected one as prime minister!

    • Watchman

“Justin Trudeau: the Pennywise of clowns for Canadians”

      • Alain

More like Queen of the Canadian Clown.

    • Halal Bacon

  • Liberal Progressive

And here I thought Justin was just going to demand Donald Trump resign as US president as a pre-condition of renegotiating NAFT!

  • dance…dancetotheradio

    I wanna be an American.

    • Lightstream

I’d like British Columbia to separate and join the States.

      • Linda1000

Get in line, Alberta is going first. What do the radical Greenies and NDP socialists of B.C. have in common with the U.S.

        • Alain

Yes, we have them but they do not represent all of BC by any chance. In fact much on the west side of Washington State, Oregon and on down the coast suffers from the same cancer. No matter since once we are part of the great country, then I shall move with my family to a better area that is not crawling with wackos.

          • Linda1000

California has made some rumblings about separating from the U.S. and since Vancouver has long been known as L.A. North, it makes sense for B.C. to be an extension of the whole western wet coast from the Mexico border up to Alaska. Next big earthquake, the whole coast line is going to fall into the Pacific anyway. 🙂

never..illegals on food stamps , welfare .. Kalifornia almost as bankrupt as Ontario

Kali&, Moonbeam Brown need DC printing presses
            Democrats need Kali votes

  • Hard Little Machine

That’s not how Federalism works. A foreign government can’t demand states change their laws and they can’t demand that our Federal government force the states to change their laws either. Go find a dictatorship or a monarchy or the EU if you need that.

    • Alain

Nor is that how our parliamentary democracy works either according to the division of powers in the constitution. That said the provinces have allowed the on-going interference into provincial jurisdiction that Ottaw now believes that is the norm. Trudeau Sr. wanted a centralised federal government with all the powers that the French government has, and due to wimps as premiers he was able to do so.

  • Drunk by Noon ✓

    This is very curious.
I take it for granted that Canadian Unions would be supporting Justin Trudeau, but I didn’t think those same unions has any cross border influence.
    This is unexpected.
In any event, these are state laws, not Federal labor laws.

    • canminuteman

An awful lot of unions are international in scope. The IBEW, International brotherhood of electrical workers as one example.

      • DaninVan

Ideologically speaking, the Unions should be supporting the NDP, and they do Provincially to a certain extent. But If you’re a Catholic Italian in the IWA, I’m guessing you play your cards pretty close to your chest.
The NDP is contrary to everything to believe in, the Liberals not a lot better.

  • bob e

let’s have the newly arrived ‘refugees’ decide everyone’s fate ..

  • Shuali

I fervently pray that Trump will use the NAFTA negotiations to kick this little idiot Trudeau’s ass and humiliate him to the extent that the Libs lose the next election.

    • Watchman

The more unreasonable Trudeau is, the easier it will be for Trump to walk out of NAFTA completely. Even if he doesn’t it will mean Trudeau will have to bring more to the table as a sweetener for any deal, and that sweetener will not involve mandatory union membership for the US.

  • ontario john

I’m surprised the little moron isn’t demanding that Trump recognize Islamic holidays.

  • Halal Bacon

This is all the proof anyone needs that the liberals are against freedom for the individual. Right to work means the individuals who get a job have the right to decide for themselves whether or not they want to join a union. If a worker in a right to work state does not like the union’s policies; he/she/it can quit the union and stop paying dues. This is the main reason the lefties are pro choice when a woman wants to kill her baby, but anti choice when she decides to not join a union or quit later.

  • Alain

“Canada demands….” Wow, the Yanks must be falling down laughing. This is none of Canada’s business in the first place and again has nothing to do with trade. We are not exactly a world power with a strong leader that can impose our perverted socialism on the United States.

    • Linda1000

The UN is supposed to save Canada from the big world evils like the U.S. and North Korea to Justine? /s

      • Watchman

I think that is Trudeau’s plan: to use the UN to tell the US what it can say and do. Tump doesn’t play that way.

        • Linda1000

He seems to be giving the UN lots of Canada’s money and other freebies like Broadway tickets.. Why doesn’t the UN relocate to Brussels and join offices with the EU as they have similar agendas of dictating to the world anyway.

          • Watchman

Because they need the US money, as I believe that the US funds about 22% of the UN. Finding enough suckers to fill the hole if the US scaled back their contributions might be difficult – no UN official is going to accept having their five star lifestyle cut back.

          • J. C.

Time for Trump to cut off their funding…

          • Will Quest

Just-in is a UN globalist intent on destroying Canada’s European & Judeo-Christian heritage and our very sovereignty….. • glasnost

For Americans this has a lot to do with trade because right-to-work states consistently out-perform unionized states, and competition is part and parcel of trade. So Canada is telling the US to be less competitive, abandon right-to-work freedom, maybe introduce something like Canada’s Rand Formula where the worker isn’t forced to join the union, but must pay union dues nonetheless.

      • Alain

Yes, that is true, but this demand has everything to do with pleasing the unions and virtue signalling. That we cannot compete is our own doing, well I should give credit to our Supremes also.

  • Norman_In_New_York

In case Trudeau hasn’t gotten the message, Trump puts America first. In coming to these trade negotiations, Trudeau is, figuratively speaking, bringing a knife to a gunfight.

  • robins111

The Americans should respond by demanding Canadians be given the Right to Bear Arms. And toss out the firearms act. Written into the Trudeau Charter.

  • Blacksmith

    Ummm, no.

  • DMB

Look’s like Canada’s back with Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister.
