The free speech haters should listen to Joan Rivers and learn to just grow up

Over a decade ago I attended an interesting talk at the University of Toronto on the subject of free speech. The marquee question of the gathering was along the lines of “Should hate speech be free speech?”

The featured professor argued, in a complex and nuanced way full of legal and philosophical arguments, that hate speech should indeed fall under the rubric of free speech, so long as it’s not the sorts of threats and abuse already covered under the Criminal Code.
