How totalitarianism is winning in the west

Credit to the left-leaning Atlantic magazine for running a piece by Peter Beinart, who has actually looked at what is happening in American society and reached an uncomfortable conclusion which would be hard to find elsewhere in the media – and which is all-too pertinent in the wake of Charlottesville.

For Beinart warns that the left is lurching into totalitarianism and violence. “Antifa” purport to be anti-fascist. But they define as fascist anyone they disagree with including mainstream conservatives. Hence their violent suppression of commentators and scholars such as the conservative columnist Ann Coulter, the Breitbart controversialist Milo Yiannopoulos and the political scientist Charles Murray.

What Antifa most certainly do not do is defend democracy, freedom and liberal values.

    From The Dark Knight:

Joker; I don’t, I don’t want to kill you! What would I do without you? Go back to ripping off mob dealers? No, no, NO! No. You… you… complete me.

The far right and Antifa have a symbiotic relationship. They provide each other with enemies they can assault. Without that, they would just be a bunch of idiots marching in the street to little purpose, and of little interest to others.

  • I have never been in danger of agreeing with Beinart before but if it were not for his persistently progressive point of view which shows up when he allows that it might be “understandable if Antifa were to attack Spencer because he is a “real” racist. He seems to object a bit more to attacks on more acceptable ideas. It is good to see this come up at all in a progressive mag like The Atlantic, although I fear they magazine and the author will be severely punished by their progressive followers…

Regardless of the labels, which are constantly changing with old ones being replaced with new ones, this is a war that pits those determined to stamp out all freedom against those who support and defend freedom. Freedom’s last stand in the West is the United States, which is why it is vital to do everything to defend freedom.
