Former Facebook exec fears robots will destroy society within 30 years

A former Facebook executive has quit his job and now lives as a recluse in the wilderness — because he is convinced that machines will take over the world.

Antonio Garcia Martinez worked as a project manager for the social media giant in Silicon Valley but became terrified by the relentless march of technology.

He reckons that machines will have taken half of humanity’s jobs within 30 years, sparking revolt and armed conflict.

So he quit his job, fled his home and now lives in woodland north of Seattle with a gun for protection.

He spoke to new two-part BBC2 documentary “Secrets of Silicon Valley,” which explores the growing influence of the tech hub on global development.

Sounds good. Can we put some of these robots in Syria?

I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

On the bright side, newest info indicates that, at a purely professional level, AI poses the most significant threat to the LAW PROFESSION. Research predicts that AI will wipe out 90% of all “employment” of lawyers within a decade or so. No more “paralegals” and lots less new “law graduates” will be required. Stands to reason when you pause to think about it. This single fact marked a significant change in media coverage of AI. Until then, there was a “glee” between the lines of reports re AI when it was presumed that “blue collar jobs” would be most impacted by AI. Currently, there is a “fear factor” in reports about progress in the AI field. Lawyers are trembling.

The finance sector will be next: AI will largely de-employ/replace accountants, financial analysts and actuaries in short order.

When these (and other) overwhelmingly parasitic professions have been effectively decimated by AI technology, I think the society will look to replace the “problematic” human element in other information-based sectors such as education. At least, the propaganda to which future generations will be subjected will be CONSISTENT; in the alternative, propaganda could be expunged from education completely, thanks to AI. It will be OUR CHOICE.

Machines will always be machines, and Mankind will always be the Crown of Creation.

But see my comment that now is probably just below your one, HLM.

Broad statements like ‘robots will kill us all’ are millenarian nonsense. Something they said about trains, electric lights, radio and cars

So help me I just got a fortune cookie that reads, “Everybody loves progress but nobody likes change.”

LOL, let me fix the headline…

Just because he’s crazy doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get him (and us).

90% of all service sector jobs from retail and secretarial to lawyers will go. The driving industry will go along with their coordinators. Most doctors will be a thing of the past. The car insurance industry will be decimated. We will get better service, exponentially more accurate diagnoses and surgery, free access to education and legal services and so much more. I, for one, can’t wait.
