LGBT refugee organization withdraws from Vancouver Pride parade due to police participation

A local organization dedicating to helping LGBT refugees is pulling out of the Vancouver Pride parade to protest police participation.

Rainbow Refugee has marched in the parade for 10 years.

In an open letter to the Vancouver Pride Society (VPS), Rainbow Refugee board chair Sharalyn Jordan explained that many of its members come from countries where they faced homophobic, transphobic, and HIV–related persecution and discrimination.

While some members felt that developing a relationship with the police to have them marching in Pride is an accomplishment, other members had a pervasive fear and distrust of police.

Yea that’ll win hearts and minds.

Wonder how many come from Islamic countries… the hypocrisy is large.

” . . . other members had a pervasive fear and distrust of police.”

And that is a misguided, unfounded fear that Rainbow Refugee should work with its members to dispell and not cater and fold to the irrational fears of some of its members. Police in Canada are tolerant and accepting of the LGBTQ community, almost to a fault, and rainbow refugees should make an effort to overcome their biases and recognize that fact. Isn’t due process, rule of law and a respectful Police force one of the reasons they came to Canada in the first place?

If all the lgbt people leave the parade and cops remain then we would have something proud of. Guess it would be a Blue Pride parade.

But, but, I thought I thought they wanted more gays hired on police departments!

    So confused.

You’re looking at it through a “logical and common sense” lens. You need to use an “intersectional, queer, systemic oppression, gender-fluid” lens.

With regard to the suspended councillor, a gaffe is when a politician, against his better judgment, tells the truth.

I’m surprise there is still even police protection at this event.

What I find interesting is if your gay then HIV positive status isn’t blocking you from immigrating… but if your straight they check you for HIV.

  • Sit back and watch as the left eats itself.

Always comforting to see it takes a whitey to run organizations.
