A family affair: Plane bomb suspect is ‘related to a notorious Islamic State fighter’ who traded life as a suburban labourer for bombs and selfies in Syria

A butcher and a painter allegedly involved in a terror plot to destroy a plane are related to Islamic State fighters in Syria, it has been claimed.

Police arrested on four Sydney men on Saturday who were suspected of plotting to bomb a flight packed full of passengers.

And an ABC report on Monday evening has revealed two of the men had family ties with Islamic State fighters in Syria, including the notorious jihadist Ahmed Merhi.

Detained painter Khaled Merhi is said to be related to the terrorist who experts said had been ‘quite active in reaching back to Australia’.
