Steve Bannon Wants Google, Facebook to Be Regulated Like Utilities

Bannon reportedly stated that companies such as Google and Facebook have become so essential to the internet and to the everyday life of many U.S. citizens that they should be regulated as a natural monopoly. Bannon’s position is becoming an increasingly popular one amongst tech experts. Jonathan Taplin, the author of Move Fast and Break Things: How Facebook, Google, and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermined Democracy, recently claimed that tech companies like Google and Facebook have become too big and may need to be broken up.

AT and T eventually reconstituted itself.

Exactly. Breaking them up is pointless. What needs to happen is that they should be ignored entirely from a lobbying aspect. THAT will reign them in. Especially when scum suckers like Zuck, aid in the persecution of minority groups in Islamic nations… They should get NO play from the governments of nations that claim to be for freedom.

    • AT&T may have been able to reconstitute itself.

Break it up again. (The first break up helped stimulate competition.)

At the same time break up ANY company that controls over 10% of any industry.

        Okay.
I think if you take that approach then you have to guard against state owned foreign companies as well.
And tangentially, why is it that the hotel industry has never had to be broken up?

        • State owned foreign companies with more than 10% of the market should not be allowed to operate in the US.

What company in the hotel industry controls more than 10% of the market?

Tough choices. A lot of fake money is wondering where to hide next.

I was working banquets in the years leading up to the dot com bust in 2000.
It was incredible to watch the investment companies trying to shake as much money as they could out of families before the crash.
Meetings of two hundred people with breakfast lunch and sometimes dinner were all gratis.
Then the crash came and wiped them out overnight.
Next day they all turned into real estate agents.

Designating Google and Facebook as public utilities, same as electric companies, is the right idea and better than breaking them up.
