Crew of anti-migrant boat held in Cyprus over ‘people-smuggling’

The crew of a ship hired by a European far-right movement aiming to disrupt migrant rescues in the Mediterranean has been arrested in Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus for alleged people-smuggling after 21 south Asians were found onboard.

The newspaper Kıbrıs Postası reported on Wednesday that the crew of the C-Star had been taken off the vessel at the port of Famagusta.

Faika Pasa, a local human rights activist, said nine crew members, including the captain and a German described as the “second captain”, had been arrested and remanded in custody. Police in Famagusta said the crew and ship’s Swiss owner had appeared in court on Thursday, accused of preparing and circulating false documents.
