Russia ‘could be arming the Taliban’, according to newly emerged video

New footage adds weight to previous suggestions made by Afghan and US officials that Moscow is helping fuel renewed insurgent offensive

The Russian government may be providing Taliban militants in Afghanistan with sophisticated weaponry to assist in its fight against the US-backed government, it has emerged.

New photos and video footage obtained by CNN shows insurgents armed with sniper rifles, heavy machine guns and Kalashnikov-type guns which weapons experts who looked at the video said had been stripped of any symbols or insignia which could identify their origin.

In one video, a fighter wearing a mask says he received the arms for free from over the border in Tajikistan.

Anyone else recall memory of Russia fleeing Afghanistan years ago? I seem to remember that we weren’t exactly helping them to win. So they should be helping us because…? Perhaps a different kind of Karma, eh?

    • It sure would be nice if anyone at the top of the US or Russia government knew anything about Islam.

Fact: Muslims hate any and all non-Muslims.

Fact: Any weapon provided to a Muslim will eventually be used against the provider.

Fact: Islamic theology is the problem. Destroy the mosques. Kill the mullahs. Kill anyone promoting Islam. That will slow things down. Fast.

Ok stupid question why? The blowback will be immense. IS will get their hand on the stuff and use it against tbe Russians as much as American. We’re all scum to them

    • Russians will trade weapons with anyone.

If this is true, it doesn’t surprise me.

Please….Within the “article” these words….New photos and video footage obtained by CNN ….Obtained by CNN. Right. One can rely on CNN to have the facts.

Far more likely that the CIA and the NSA are arming the Taliban, just as they have been for ISIS since they founded them several years ago.

Taliban/Mujahadeen…tomato…tomahto…Isn’t Russia merely doing what the US did back in the 80s?

  • tom_billesley

Tajikistan isn’t part of the Russian Federation, but Russia has a strong presence there.

Nothing sourced by or from CNN can be believed. Turn the page. There’s a 99% likelihood this is either wrong or fake.

Maybe the Russians are just recycling the weapons the Americans are giving to jihadis in Syria.

    • Drunk_by_Noon

Even that narrative is falling apart.
Thy didn’t really need any small arms as they had already overrun considerable stocks of syrian and Iraqi small arms.
We did have a few TOW missile teams running around in the North, but that seems to be it, that we know of for sure,

      • Sid Falco

Well the tale of the Libyan arms being shipped there hasn’t been discredited yet afaik

…the stamped Arsenal and Proof marks are pretty tiny on the receivers…AK-47s were made in 30 countries…

    How real is this story?
    I have no idea.
How real is the story that we are supporting rebels in Syria.
Does anybody remember that congressional testimony that numerated the rebels that we had trained to be something like 5?
Is it possible that the Russians are rearming the Taliban?
Yeah, it sounds like something they would do, but it also smells like CNN’s anti-Russian propaganda, that’s somehow designed to stick to Trump in a guilt by nothingburger association.
Are there anymore sources to this story?

    CNN is arming the Taliban.
    It all fits.

This is now news: what “could” be happening, not what IS happening. If the insignia’s identifying their origin have been stripped how have they identified the origin? Because “kalishnikov,” and an illiterate fighter say so? The most copied design in the world? Kalishnikov-type weapons are literally produced in over 2 dozen countries, including the USA. Given the Taliban are the political arm of the former Mujahadeen–no friend of the Russians and armed by the CIA–this has very little ‘trust’ or ‘verify’ to it. And given the Russians are fighting ISIS–a metastasis of the Taliban–how does it even make sense? I suppose in the same way Assad likes to bomb civilians with sarin gas that he’s already been shown not to possess–because the US says so.
