What’s with U2 at Canada 150 bash?

It’s so stereotypical Canadian that we’d hand our big stage over to non-Canadian performers on Canada’s 150th birthday celebration on Parliament Hill.

“Incredible news! Bono and The Edge from @U2 will be joining us on Parliament Hill on July 1 for #CanadaDay! Don’t miss it! #canada150,” read a message posted on the federal government’s Capital Experience twitter feed Friday.

Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly tweeted: “Exciting news! Look forward to seeing U2! It’s a beautiful (Canada) Day! #Canada150 #CanadaDay”

As much as I detest Bono’s politics – the Fed’s choice of U2 is a lot better than forcing Canadians to listen to Aboriginal throat singers, the warbling of Buffy Saint Marie or some 3rd rate RAP singer – that the govt usually foists on the population in the name of being politically correct.

Not only do I detest his politics, I am not a huge fan of his music either, but you make a good point. They are probably coming to be fawned on by the PM.

I remember seeing a Great Big Sea concert in Majors Hill Park on Canada Day twenty odd years ago. It was fantastic. Not only are they “Can Con” they are a very entertaining, very popular band.

    • Oh I bet this year will be real diverse.

Plus, as I read elsewhere yesterday, Bono singing without Cher by his side is really not worth seeing. Never was. Never will be. Even though he’s allegedly dead! 😉

      • andycanuck

Ask Justin who would be stupid enough to get killed skiing?

      • I expected that there would be some surveillance at the event. But Trudeau bringing in a hi-tech spy plane like the U2 observing the event from 70,000 feet, is just plain ridiculous.

        • Justin St.Denis

You were so right about how Bono needs Cher to carry him through a performance. You’re likely correct about the ridiculous application of military resources here. Sad.

Aren’t you following the SJW narrative: there is no such thing as Canadian culture, no Canadian values, and the only valuable culture in Canada is that which is brought in by recent non-Canadians, especially refugees and migrants.

I wonder if feminist Trudeau ran this choice, past his Chinese masters yet?

    • k2

I wonder if any migrant bands are performing … hmm, but Muslims don’t like musical instruments, do they? Pity.

      • Watchman

I believe islamicists are capable of providing percussive music accompaniments as one recently showed after an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, UK.

    • Bla Bla

Bingo! Canada ceased to exist last year – we are now ‘post national’! Duh!

  • ontario john

Canadian bands represent our white colonial past, and detract from apologizing all Canada Day.

  • mobuyus

U2 has a full time office in NY city I think, where the staff is tasked with finding awards for bono and the band, and looking for pompous occasions so that bono can ride the coat-tails and hi-jack the proceedings. After omar alghabra’s influence over trudeau’s government we don’t need bono trying to run things.

In the past there would be 2 shows one from 11:30-2:00 and the other 8:00-10:00 this year it will be one massive show 11:30-10:00 pm.

…tired of the jingle-jangle guitar and the jungle-boy vocalizations…that song was sung 30 years ago, man…

  • disqusW6sf

Except for some current bands that use instruments like the saxophone, brass instruments, etc. along with their electrical instruments I hate popular music. I won’t be listening to any of this on July 1st.

    • Justin St.Denis

We’re setting up a really spectacular fire pit in our yard that weekend. My wife’s latest design. 😉 Then we get to eat moose burgers and fire-roasted potatoes and corn. Yum. 😉

I won’t be celebrating. Work demands my presence.

  • Malcolm Y

Couldn’t get Heart or Bachman Turner Overdrive – or are they all dead?

    • Clausewitz

Both alive and kicking, but they are obviously white Canadians of European descent so ever so passé.

  • Dave

Canada 150 Bash? It should really be called a wake, for a once proud country.

    • Clausewitz

Just one long marketing scam is how I see it.

    • Bla Bla

Indeed. Any ‘country’ without a culture is not much of a country. Just a sorry geographical location for others to come in, colonize, and expand their own country – like the Chinese buying up mines/industry over here, and sending their own people in to work them – just like in africa.

Ah shit! I was so looking forward to Anne Murray…and Marg Osborne!

  • Exile1981

I’m sure Maggie could have recommended some aged rockers to her little boy.

  • Jaedo Drax

and how much are they getting paid?
