The F-35 has already crushed billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars, so I hope to God it’s the best thing in the world.

So according to this video, the F-35 can take off, turn, do loop-dees, and land, all without crashing. Color me unimpressed. The least they could’ve done was showcase the Marines’ VTOL version.

There is not enough sunk cost fallacy in the world to convince me that this whole project doesn’t need axed. Hundreds of billions of $$ in cost overruns, and the most expensive aircraft in our fighter inventory. The F-16 could’ve been upgrade into a ‘Super Falcon’ for a fraction of the cost, and would likely have become the most nimble fighter in the world, to boot. If the Navy wants a stealth fighter now because it missed the boat on the ATF program (another boondoogle where the least capable fighter, the F-22, was chosen over faster, stealthier, and just as nimble YF-23… because COST, if you can believe it!!), it should either purchase a carrier-capable version of the F-22, or, even better, go to Northrop-Grumman for the YF-23.

The Marines didn’t need VTOL to make use of the F/A-18. If they want stealth, see above for my suggestion for the Navy.

The Air Force already has the F-22. If it needed an upgrade to the F-16, they should’ve just upgraded the darn F-16. But I know this is not how military bureaucracies think. Why have a superb fighter at cost X, when you can have a superb fighter at several multiples the cost? I saw the same damned thing while I was in the Navy, when there was a program to upgrade certain system on our Los Angeles-class submarines. If you want a bungled-up upgrade process, give it a bureaucrat.
