There’s gotta be a reason why that building went up in flames so fast.

Article today attributes the volatility of the fire to the newly installed cladding on the exterior of the building.
The people that live in public housing seem to be irresponsible and need to be coddled like children. Having worked years ago for a major utility where I frequently entered public housing apartments, I can tell you that most were unkempt (lots of junk, piles of dirty laundry, dirty dishes, cardboard boxes etc) and the tenants were less than fastidious about cleanliness and less than responsible.
I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if the outcome of the investigation is an overheated pot or smoking were the initial cause of the fire.

I have never had any faith in the “shelter in-place and wait for rescue” advice.
At anyplace you work, live, or frequent, you should already have in your mind a plan to get out that doesn’t involve any assistance.
Keep a small micro-flashlight (Mag-Light “Solitaire”) on your key chain and make sure the battery is still good every day before you leave the house.
They can easily save your life.

The idea of shelter in-place is so that firefighters can get up the staircase without being blocked by people leaving. Of course, that assumes that the fire will remain confined to one flat until the firefighters can get to it. In this case a false assumption.

Any advice that goes against your survival instincts should be ignored.

Ethiopian taxi driver Behailu Kebede, in whose kitchen the fire started, first packed all his clothes in a suitcase, before banging on the door of his neighbour to tell her about the fire before he left. That was nice of him.

And doesn’t bother to call it in. Probably wasted 5 or 10 minutes.

The appropriate response from authorities would be multiple charges of manslaughter or negligence causing death. However that would be racist. Instead he’ll be rewarded with another apartment to ruin.

    • I had to read this twice.

      Just … wow …

    • It’s good that the U.K. is importing so many cab drivers. Being able to drive is an ability few native britons posses. You need Ethiopians for that kind of skill set.

      Surprising???

        Maybe illuminating..
I’ve never been, and despite all the information showing how bad it’s gotten, had still somehow not figured it this bad.

Third world fire in third world North Kensington.

  • Also consider how many things are made out of plastics and other flammable things.

Those may not have started the fire but certainly caused it to spread.

      Stop quoting Billy Joel.
He couldn’t keep Christie Brinkley happy.

  • Maggat

All that money wasted on a cladding system to combat globull warming and the resulting fire added to global warming. Go figure.

There’s also the energy to be expended in materials and construction for replacement building/s. The environmentally friendly solution is to deport enough people to match demand with supply.
Add to that the energy cost of all the media, politician and celebrity visits.

    • Imagine how many more buildings are built like that.
