Canada seeks larger world role as U.S. retreats: foreign minister

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (L) embraces Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland after she delivered a speech on Canada’s foreign policy in the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada June 6, 2017. REUTERS/Chris Wattie

Freeland spoke after recent NATO and G7 summits where U.S. President Donald Trump upset leaders to such an extent that German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed doubts about the reliability of the United States.

  • Oracle9

Between catching up to our NATO commitments and reinvesting in our hollowed-out military, plus the myriad giveaways to so many other concerns such as Indonesia and the UNWRA money-pit, vast numbers of ‘refugees’, on top of a weak economy, Trudeau will prove to be a disaster far worse than we could have imagined. Get ready for some damn rough times.

    • Mark Matis

We from South of the Border want to thank you for enthusiastically accepting all those Mexicans and others who have decided that the US is no longer where they wish to live, and have emigrated across your border to do all those jobs that Bob and Doug McKenzie simply will not do. Now that President Trump has cut the illegals’ invasion from Mexico by 70%!

      • The Deplorable Rosenmops
        • Mark Matis

That doesn’t work unless and until you BUILD A WALL!

Y’all ain’t got anywhere NEAR enough Mounties to stop the invasion…

          Eh? Eh?

          • The Deplorable Rosenmops

We need a Trump, but instead our prime minister is a chump.

          • Mark Matis

Some of us will be glad to send you a chimp. Would that be an upgrade? At least the BLM will grovel at his feet. Or his… whatever…

Do note that flies are VERY fond of him. And if there’s one thing flies know and love…

      • ntt1

we still refuse Lena Dunham, thats just too much pork for the country that invented porkies.

    • ntt1

just to compound that our newly elected communist government coalition with pond scum greens is joyously planning to join in with Vancouver’ s mayor moonbeam (a tides product) and toll every road and bridge in the interest of fairness.

  • Drunk_by_Noon

Meanwhile in Trump Land… The U.S. points a locked and cocked gun at the heads of the UN Human Rights Council.

  • LairdKintyre

This is hilarious. Germany under Merkel did the same thing thing last week. All the NATO allies are throwing tantrums. Essentially, Daddy (USA) isn’t going to pay my bills so I’m going to say screw you I don’t need you and grow up and make my own way. Trump employed a little tough love and it worked. The freeloading children want to start pulling their weight. But you go ahead Trudeau keep telling yourself that Canada is making its own way. Whatever helps your brused freeloading ego.

    • canminuteman

They won’t start to pull their weight. That would require spending money, and everyone is absolutely broke. They can’t afford to pay welfare benefits to millions of invaders and defend themselves against those invaders at the same time, and I suspect they will go the welfare route. There will be a lot more people killed before people wake up.

  • Clausewitz

And what exactly are we going to use to step into this increased activity on the world stage? Unicorn farts and pixie dust?

    • dance…dancetotheradio

Click your red heels together and say I wish I were in Kansas.

      • Mark Matis

How bigoted of you! He will instead click those heels and say:

I wish I was in Nunavut!
I wish I was in Nunavut!
I wish I was in Nunavut!

        • andycanuck

But there’s no place like Nome?

        • dance…dancetotheradio

You have no idea how close I am to Nunavut.

          • Linda1000

Oh, please you are not anywhere near. How are the blackflies?

          • dance…dancetotheradio

            I’m at the 56th parallel.
            Nunavut starts at the 60th.
And the bugs are starting to come out.
            Got bit today.

          • dance…dancetotheradio

And the sun went down at 22:02.
It will rise again at 04:30.
I thought it would be interesting to see how long the days could get up here.
But, I have a hard time sleeping when it’s light out.

          • Linda1000

Well, in Calgary the sun goes down at 9:46 pm and rises at 5:32 these days. I just checked.

          • Bataviawillem

            You are in Fort Mac?

    • LairdKintyre

Seriously? How shallow do you think Justin is? Hes also got magic socks and selfie power.

      • Watchman

Justine is so shallow that a newborn baby would be safe to place facedown in his puddle, and be more in danger from lying facedown than from drowning.

    • Clink9

C’mon, we could pick up the U.S. Tab for at least next Wednesday and Thursday.

    • Drunk_by_Noon

What I would like to see from Canada is a unilateral commitment of about 10,000 combat troops to clean up some hell hole somewhere in the world.
Don’t ask permission, don’t seek a consensus, but just execute the mission, and execute it well.

      • ntt1

how about 3 dozen surplus social workers and a six pack of grief councilors?

        • Watchman

Chief, Would You Believe: Justin Trudeau, a banana, and a leaky canoe?

    • Linda1000

What about fairy dust? Sorry, I didn’t write the f-word, honest.
      Dear Justin:

    • ntt1

      the power of…acting.

    • DJ

Wheel-barrels full of money to developing nations, UN derived programs, indiscriminate monies to “fight climate change” to countries that don’t even believe in that shell-game, lots of Trudeau-laden photoshoots, CBC puff-pieces interviewing gleeful supporters comprised predominantly of women and beta males, Chrystia Freeland weeping tears of World peace while doing guest pieces with the house n****r, and climate Barbie forgetting we live in oft freezing cold Canada rather than Malibu, preaching about “evidence based” perpetual motion machines because “science,” 52 genders, and a purge of unwitting Islamophobes because diversity is our strength.

  • LairdKintyre

America is reasserting itself on thevworld stage. Trump stood like a man up to the king of Saudi Arabia. After 8 years of Obama hindering America and groveling to dictators it’s probably hard to recognize what Trump is doing

    • Drunk_by_Noon

      I think that’s exactly it.
We are moving in a different direction away from the symbolic to the tangible.

  • simus1

    Reuters ? Reuters ?
That name rings a bell …………
Anyway, she will need an executive jet with long legs to save the world and guess who has just the wheels she needs ?

    • dance…dancetotheradio

I always revert to the Roto Rooter jingle when I read that name.

  • Liberal Progressive

Well somebody has to support the third world.

If Canada won’t borrow the money to give to them, who will?

  • Ed

“All we need is hugs; da da da da da… all we need is hugs, ya; hugs is all we need.”

  • Ann

Seems the leadership they like was Obama’s. The do nothing leader when it came to Syria ’cause he was working the Iran deal which allowed him to do – not even a half-assed job containing ISIL. He also made it easy for dropped on his head at birth Trudeau to ramp up his appeasement for Islamists here + abroad by offering winter camping tips in the fight against ISIL.

Will it be long before Trudeau + Freeland welcome Iran as their new bestie in the M.E. cause it sure looks like the direction they’re heading in as Trump + Congress ramp up sanctions on Iran.

  • Gary

Her grandfather entered Canada after WW2 and failed to declare that he supported Hitler and the Nazi’s death camps.

  • Who is going to pony up the cash? Trudeau? His own money?

    • New Centurion

He’s going to hand out another one of those giant Publishers Clearinghouse cheques from the stack that he has in his office.

      • I think that’s how he’s planning on paying off the debt.

        “What? That’s not really money?!”

  • Norman_In_New_York

Trump’s unreliability means that we will not be their patsies while he is in the White House.

  • PaxCan

I think the real story here is Trudeau was spotted showing up to work in the HoC for once.

Seriously, does anyone have any idea of his attendance record so far because he seems to be on a perpetual working holiday.

    • jayme

He’s much too important for such trivialities. More seriously, there was a vote on reaffirming Canada’s commitment to the Paris Accord and it appeared the PCs were being whipped into voting for this. So much for Scheer opposing the carbon tax. Traitors.

    • ntt1

keep him away from O’Bambi and his endless golf game or we really will be fucked

  • hyperzombie

Wow, will Trump get sick of winning, Making Canadians pay more for defence is epic.

    • New Centurion

It took us over 30 years to replace the Sea King. This is all talk.

      • LairdKintyre

You are misinformed. Actually the Dealings have been used for 50 years.

        • New Centurion

We got the Sea King in ’63 however I believe it wasn’t the Navy’s first choice. The process to replace them started in 1983.

  • ntt1

when it comes to enlarging roles ,you really need a drama teacher . hes ready but will the world accept a ball less wonder?

  • dagawker

    Retreats? Americans don’t retreat.

  • tom_billesley

How can Canada fail with a defense minister who was the architect of Operation Medusa?
