Injured tally from Turin stampede rises to 1,000: police

AFP reporters at the scene said chaotic scenes ensued in a packed square 10 minutes before the end of the match on Saturday evening, with the panic apparently triggered by fireworks being let off and one or more people shouting that a bomb had exploded.

    For terrorists, panic is a force multiplier.

    • Maybe I’m not normal, but my first reaction in a situation like that wouldn’t be to run, much less to follow a mob of running panic-stricken people. You have to at least take enough time to assess what exactly you are running from, and where exactly you are running to. Otherwise you might end up running off a cliff.

        IRA at times planted a second bomb and there was a risk of walking towards it.

        Sometimes in large enough crowds if you don’t move with the flow you’ll be trampled.
