Law Society tribunal lawyer calls sex assault ‘minor offence’

Raj Anand is not only a lawyer but the former Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission — so you’d think he’d know better.

So why did the vice-chair of the Law Society of Upper Canada tribunal make several disturbing comments that appeared to minimize a sexual assault complaint while deciding whether paralegal Nephat Siziba should be suspended?

Here’s another wonderful diversity story – Canada can’t deport the Fuck because nobody will take him – in his infinite wisdom – idiot judge forces Govt to release the guy to walk our streets…Because of his criminal record, Canada has been trying to deport him for more than 20 years. Ali has always insisted he is willing to be deported, but he can’t prove his citizenship in either Ghana or Nigeria, so neither country will take him back.

$10 says lawsuit coming and Govt with throw cash at the problem to make it go away.

Right, in some cultures sexual assault is just another way to say “Hi.”

That’s why diverse immigration can be so edifying.

Yes! Diverse immigration is a swell way to keep police and criminal lawyers employed.

      Probably wasn’t “rape, rape”.

Whoopi needs to call in her analysis on that score.

The Law Society of Upper Canada is one big, fat joke.

Several years ago, I registered a documented complaint against a member for his questionable ethics and very unprofessional practices (no, i was not sexually assaulted). Every few months, I received a letter from the Society assuring me that that my complaint was being investigated and that I would be hearing from them shortly. Several years went by. One day I received a letter letting me know that a hearing had been scheduled and asking me to appear as witness. It was then that i found out that several other people had also made complaints against the lawyer.

But the hearing never took place. It was cancelled and a cryptic note was sent saying that the matter had been resolved. The lawyer is still alive and kicking. He still aggressively advertises. So be very, very careful of whom you hire to help resolve your legal problems. In essence, you are on your own.

    • It is a bad joke.

Well, at least the law society is keeping those damn Christian law students from practicing in Ontario.

        Thank heaven for small mercies!

Letting Raj Anand’s remarks stand without censure will put more women at risk than letting Nephat Siziba continue to ply his trade unhindered.
Saying that ” ….Obviously, sexual assault is serious in principle.” rather implies that it isn’t so serious in practise.

No wonder every friggin rapist and pedophile wants to live in Canada, there are laws to protect them.

As I recall, Raj Anand left the OHRC under a cloud of suspicion re influence peddling and financial improprieties. Instead of an investigation, Anand was simply parachuted out into another plum job elsewhere in the broader public service, and another OHRC Director was appointed. anyone else recall this? Seems to me this goes back to the early 1990s.
