Bill Nye the Science Guy’s Science Lies: The “Climate Change March” Edition

By now, most people have probably seen some of the viral videos from Bill Nye’s new show – the cringe-worthy “Sex Junk” rap and the just plain disturbing “Ice Cream Cone Orgy” sketch – and you might think that’s the worst of it. But you’d be wrong.

I for one welcome the Left talking up the ‘science’ angle. It starkly highlights, over time, how they are NOT about facts and figures, but rather faith and feelings.

    Tyson, Nye, Suzuki…fake, fake, fake.

If the left have their way, your children’s next vehicle might be an ox cart.

They want to do away with petroleum, and they are managing our electrical grid out of business with their green energy so electric cars won’t be on the menu either.

Bill Lie’s boiling water “experiment” is total junk science.

But for a minute lets set aside the many problems in his simplified climate model.

His thesis, as expressed in this experiment is arguing that we would have a catastrophic ocean rise due to the thermal expansion of water in the oceans.

Lets use his sides numbers. The Guardian claims that we face a “catastrophic” rise in the atmospheric temperature of 4 degrees by the year 2100 (or over a period of 83 years).

First of all we should note that this 4 degree rise in atmospheric temperature will not result in the same rise in ocean temperatures. But since I don’t feel like doing the calculations for this, I will ignore this problem and let Bill have the absolute worst case scenario to work with and base the following calculation on an assumed rise of ocean average temperature from 17 degrees to 21 degrees.

The ocean has a volume of about 353,000,000,000,000,000,000 gallons (using the article’s numbers). For this volume of water, with a 4 degree increase in temperature, the increase in volume due to thermal expansion would be:

    3,741,499,244,000,000 cubic meters

This would distributed across the entire ocean surface, and that surface area is approximately 360,000,000,000,000 square meters.

Which gives us 10.39 cubic meters of extra water for every 1 square meter of ocean surface

This results in a global rise in oceans of 2.18 meters over the 83 years of warming

Or in other words, 1.03 inches per year.

I look forward to the catastrophic flooding.
Manhattan should be under water by sometime in the next millennium.

Of course, the actual rise due to thermal expansion would be much less, near negligible, as the oceans would not warm at any where near the rate that the atmosphere does.

Of course there is also the change in volume due to melting ice to consider, but Bill’s half baked experiment did not take that into consideration either, and its late and I don’t feel like looking at that either.
