Sorry, College Kids, There’s No Such Thing As Hate Speech

Progressive college students seem to think violence is okay as long as it’s silencing ‘hate speech.’ Someone should tell them there’s no such thing.

For the sake of campus protestors and their professors across the country, it’s time to make something clear: there’s no such thing as hate speech.

That should go without saying, since freedom of speech and free inquiry is supposed to be what college is all about. But the recent spate of violent student protests, from the University of California at Berkeley to Middlebury College in Vermont, have been met with a collective shrug from an alarming number of college students, professors, and administrators who seem to be under the impression that violence is okay so long as its purpose is to silence “hate speech.”

The original intent of hate speech laws has been obfuscated and overreached.

They must be repealed NOW until they expand into police-state use.

The following excellent article touches on the main points and should be referenced until we understand fully the slippery slope down which we are descending:

    • Good point.

Wasn’t hate speech defined by people who wanted to jail Ernst Zundel and the like?
Talk about biting you in the ass.

Even the original intent was wrong and bad. In a free society there is NEVER justification for hate laws.

      • Clausewitz

The left is bereft of any means of winning an intellectual argument, so their first step is always to silence the opposition. Idea’s are not hate unless there is a direct physical action that goes along with them. Those were already covered by the incitement laws in most civilized nations. There never has been, nor ever will be an excuse for “Hate” laws.

      • Oracle9

Well, if your life has ever been threatened, real incitement for death, you might see that a little differently. It’s no fun, and the law is required in such situations.

No politician in this country has the testicular fortitude necessary to do anything about the drastic over-reach of our well intended yet hopelessly naïve hate speech laws.

    • Alain

In Canada that is true, and even Harper was very disappointing for not coming to the defence of free speech. Yes, I know he removed that vile part of the HRA, but I never heard him come out in defence of free speech when it was under attack here.

Progressive college students = today’s Hitler Youth

Watching these little twits “fight” at the Berkeley rally lately makes clear their entire upbringing, award for showing up, makes they think they’ll win at everything. They’re horrified to find out that the props in their magnificent life drama… the guys on the other side actually hit back… and it hurts!!!
