Yale Women: Renaming Calhoun College for Feminist Icon ‘Perpetuates White Supremacy’
Not everyone is happy about Yale’s decision to rename Calhoun College from a slaveowner and white supremacist to a feminist icon, Rear Adm. Grace Murray Hopper. The loudest outcry comes not from anyone wishing to preserve history, but from the Yale Women’s Center, which claims that choosing a white woman ignores Yale’s history of slavery and perpetuates white supremacy.
The university organization is displeased that Yale chose the accomplished alumna and computer science pioneer instead of a woman of color. On Facebook (via Yale Daily News), the center said the choice of Hopper doesn’t reflect the issues and values raised by Yale students.
In the self-contradicting post, the center said that while they were “happy with the decision,” and hoped Hopper would inspire future generations of women in STEM education, it wasn’t good enough. They declared it an “act of whitewashing” that “silenced” student voices.
Trump Tower a ‘beacon’ of controversy in Vancouver as grand opening nears
Vancouver’s Trump International Hotel and Tower has transformed into a potent symbol of Trump’s candidacy and presidency, observers say. Protests over U.S. policy inevitably end up on its doorstep and provincial and city politicians have said the Trump name doesn’t represent Vancouver.
“It’s more than a beacon of racism,” said Coun. Kerry Jang, who has urged the developer to drop the Trump brand. “It’s a beacon of intolerance. It’s a beacon of sexism and bullying. That’s just not Vancouver.”
‘California is a nation, not a state’: A fringe movement wants a break from the U.S.
“I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of an independent California,” Geoff Lewis said as he stood in a glass-walled conference room adorned with California’s grizzly-bear flag and a sign reading “California is a nation, not a state.”
Refugee pictures show difference between Canada and Trump’s America
Donald Trump has struck a hard line on Syrian and other refugees from mostly Muslim countries, trying to impose a blanket ban on those seeking asylum (although his controversial travel ban has been suspended).
This is alongside a tough rhetoric against migrants, even floating the idea of using the national guard to ’round up’ illegal migrants.
So these photos, showing a group of African refugees jumping away from US border patrol into the arms of the Royal Canadian Mountain Police, may not be such a surprise.
Obama-linked activists have a ‘training manual’ for protesting Trump
Organizing for Action, a group founded by Obama and featured prominently on his new post-presidency website, is distributing a training manual to anti-Trump activists that advises them to bully GOP lawmakers into backing off support for repealing ObamaCare, curbing immigration from high-risk Islamic nations, and building a border wall.
‘Take them in!’ Massive Barcelona march urges Madrid to welcome refugees
Up to half a million activists have flooded the streets of Barcelona demanding the government in Madrid lives up to the EU-set refugee quota and welcome thousands more of asylum seekers into the country.
“Enough Excuses! Take Them In Now!” and “No More Deaths, Open The Borders!” slogans have been heard since 4 pm in Barcelona when hundreds of thousands gathered in support of the refugees.
NPR’s Hinojosa: ‘There Should Be An Attempt’ To Have No One Show Up to a Trump Presser
Hinojosa said that the mainstream media keep sending “top talent, to be completely insulted and disrespected by the president of the United States. It begins to feel like we are in an abusive relationship, and that we’re putting ourselves out there to be attacked.”
Meryl Streep: I’m under attack by Nazi ‘brownshirts’ since I criticized Trump
“It’s terrifying to put the target on your forehead, and it sets you up for all sorts of attacks and armies of brownshirts and bots and worse, and the only way you can do it is to feel you have to,” Streep said in address to attendees of the Human Rights Campaign’s Saturday evening awards gala in New York City.
