‘A hazardous situation is developing’: More than 162,000 residents near America’s tallest dam are told to leave as water continues to burst through an eroded spillway

Officials have ordered more than 162,000 residents near the Oroville Dam in Northern California to evacuate the area on Sunday, saying a ‘hazardous situation is developing’ after an emergency spillway severely eroded.

Releases through the dam’s main, heavily damaged spillway have increased to 100,000 cubic feet per second from 55,000 cubic feet per second to try to drain Lake Oroville before a failure occurs, said the California Department of Water Resources.

Oroville lake depths are decreasing rapidly because of this and water should stop flowing over the emergency spillway in several hours.

However, this doesn’t mean the dam won’t collapse from severe erosion.
