Germany’s Interior Ministry has suggested a fine of up to 1,000 euros for imams officiating child marriages, according to Die Welt newspaper. Other officials urge a blanket annulment for refugees who married too young.
Berlin is set to ban all religious ceremonies marrying children on German soil, Die Welt newspaper reported on Wednesday. However, state and federal officials are still at odds when it comes to recognizing child marriages concluded abroad, as well as the strictness of age limit for weddings in Germany itself.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere reportedly wants to introduce fines for imams marrying people under 16 years of age. The fine could be as high as 1,000 euros (over $1100), according to information cited by the Welt.
A fine huh? Boy that’ll stop em!
