Memo to Conservatives: Stop Helping Hillary

This election is about America’s future, not conservatism’s.

Sunday’s presidential debate got me thinking about a twitter conversation I had this weekend with Jonah Goldberg, a columnist for National Review and other publications. I like Jonah. He’s what I would call an ideological conservative purist. But I break with him on the most critical issue of this election cycle. Jonah and like-minded conservatives refuse to stop trying to help elect Hillary Rodham Clinton president by trashing her opponent.

In his defense, he sees it as standing up for principles and values, which is a good thing. But this conversation made me realize that it is not the left which is threatening to sink America this year; it is the conservative purist who may actually send this country swirling down the crapper.

  • The Butterfly

The biggest mistake puritans like Jonah Goldberg make is that they are looking to elect the right people. Donald Trump is the wrong person but we can make him do our bidding.

      I love Uncle Milton!

  • Alain

Claiming that he is standing up for principles and values in promoting the election of Clinton is more than disconnection; it is hypocrisy.

    • Clausewitz

So let me get this straight. Since Trump isn’t conservative enough you will support a raving Marxist/Fascist instead? Koo Koo, Koo Koo.

      • andycanuck

They’re in favour of amnesty (just like the WSJ) and think that the country will still be around, even as it is today, the four years from now when a “true” conservative will win and make everything perfect with everyone disgusted with Hill and the corrupt Dems.

It’s a cross between virtue- and class-signalling delusion, and economic self-interest (hoping people will give a crap about their future opinions when Trump loses [sic] so their pundit money will still be around; and hoping they’ll get some of the GOPe money when they’re running things again).

  • FactsWillOut

Utter bullshit. The conservative purists consistently hold their noses to vote in GWB, GHB, tried to do so for Romney and McCain, albeit in lesser numbers. All the conservative purists are behind Trump, and the so-called “conservative purists” not behind Trump are no different from Soros trolls, and certainly not conservative purists.

This election has made clear that many of the so called conservatives we have read for years are diversionary plants.
I’m too lazy to look it up but I’ll bet that places like the National Review have taken a beating.
Oh, and hey, Moonbattery, get on the fucking train already, will you?
I really used to like you.

      • mauser 98

        • Clausewitz

I liked Beck better when he was a drunk.

          • Justin St.Denis

Agreed. “Fucking Crazy Beck” wears thin very fast.

      • Clausewitz

This election is not about conservative/liberal values, it’s about the elites vs the proles, and the proles are about to commit subuku.

  • RAMA44

          • dance…dancetotheradio

Three inches of snow here on the weekend.
Sense of humour has to keep me warm.
I’m glad I have a friend like you, as well.
            It’s weird being alone.
I talk to my wife twice a day but…

    • V10_Rob

Wikileaks? Never heard of it. Trump’s father’s neighbor’s barber hated puppies.

  • simus1

“Conservative” jockeys for generous rent seekers know their place – writing what pleases their patrons.

  • GrimmCreeper

Let me see, who shall I get behind? There’s the GOP, which hasn’t done jack since we gave it the house and the senate. That, despite promises that it would stop Obama’s leftist march. Or someone who doesn’t wear the stench of career politicians looking to keep a grasp on their power. I’ll opt for the latter. Screw the GOP.

    • Clausewitz

They keep talking that Trump is about to destroy the GOPe like that’s a bad thing

  • Brett_McS

I don’t like to be cynical – well, sometimes I do- but this sounds awfully like laying a groundwork of excuses for a Trump loss. I doubt that there are enough NRO readers to swing an election, and even then, if you look at the comments there, half of them are very pro-Trump.

    • simus1

The extreme left is not afraid of a Trump victory. They would regard it as a polarizing event just like the Mike Harris victory was.
It is the corrupt comfortable insiders, rent seekers, and empire building bureaucrats who really dislike their pet projects being being called into question, detoured and disrupted.
