In pictures: The Prisoner at 50

It was 50 years ago, on 5 September 1966, that the cameras rolled for the first time in the Italianate village of Portmeirion as filming got under way for the cult 1960s adventure TV show The Prisoner.

I am not a number I am a free man.

I saw what you did there, Number Four. Identity theft is a serious crime in The Village. I would watch my mouth if I were you. You don’t want Number One to get a report about you, do you?

          There is no Number 1.
          That’s the whole idea.

I know. But why let details get in the way of a light, friendly exchange? Just….relax, okay?

          • FactsWillOut

            I will not relax! EVER!

In the long hot summer of ’76 I was working nearby and rented a cottage at the foot of the climber’s cliff Craig Bwlch-y-Moch near Tremadog, about 4 miles away. Portmeirion is well worth a visit if your in the area.

Interesting that The Prisoner and Star Trek premiered within three days of each other. Star Trek’s 50-year anniversary is Thursday Sept 8.

A great show. Paranoia minus Paranoia.

The original series with Patrick McGoohan is awesome. The 21st century remake was dismal. I bought the original series on DVD, the same day I bought the entire The Avengers series. 😉

worth it just for Diana Rigg

  • FactsWillOut

It was a sequel series to “Danger Man.”, where he was a spy.

Loved the series in obscure late night reruns in the 70s. Bought the DVD series a few years back as 50th b-day gift to myself. My 3 sons watched it with me and asked why TV producers “in Dad’s day” were allowed to make shows while obviously on LSD. Best laugh of the year for me 🙂
